These frustrations were provoked by three major revolutions: the Industrial Revolution, the French Revolution, and the American Revolution. These revolutions brought about radical upheavals in society. In what follows I am going to discuss the three revolutions and their impact upon society. The Industrial Revolution was an economical change that brought social change. In this period, people witnessed a shift from ruralism to urbanism. Many factories were built in the city. People were encouraged to move to the city, being a prosperous place where they will be better-off; and also where they can have another good life different from the one they used to live. As a result, hundreds of countryside inhabitants poured to cities. However, these promises were not fulfilled. They faced bad working conditions with small wages. They did not find where to live; they started building slums around the city. Only those who worked hard could survive. In the light of the Industrial Revolution, a new working class appeared, and people were divided into two parts the “haves” and the “have not”. Women and children started working with almost starvation wages. People, in this period, became dehumanized and manipulated like a machine. They also lost faith in God, for the Industrial Revolution has too much rationalized life, neglecting the spiritual side. Having too much reasonable thinking affected the religious side in human being. The Industrial Revolution was meant to bring material success, civilize people, and elevate living standards, but it turned out to be a failure to fulfill these promises. As a result, people suffered more and longed for their prior state. “We are born with certain rights that among these rights are life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness”, these were the very principles which the American Revolution achieved, and which turned out to be just fake ones. People did not act in conformity with these principles, for they turned a blind eye on slavery. They thought that by abolishing slavery, the whole economy, especially the southern one, will crumble. They failed to abide by the rules that they had legislated for themselves: to live in a consensus, to enjoy freedom, and to live happily. And as a result, the war between the sought and the north broke. Also, the ideals and dreams of the French Revolution, which was raised against the injustices of the monarchy of Louis 14th, soon faded away when Napoleon Bonaparte – the child of the revolution—became a dictator. Man was the center of the revolution, and it was the very first time we talked about Human Rights. William Hazlet said, “The French Revolution seemed the dawn of a new era, a new impulse had been given to men’s minds.” Most of the Romantics thought of the French Revolution as a symbol of a great future; however, it ended up by being a failure to achieve its basic tenets. Not even the richest person in the world could outshine the glowing aura of a genius who could cure cancer. Unfortunately, this very same knowledge can sometimes lead to destruction. The enlightenment which we greatly rely on can harm us for three main reasons. First, knowledge has cost a great number of lives. The best example of this can be seen during World War II. During this time, scientist Emilio Gino Segrè had discovered the potential of plutonium as a source of great power. From one perspective, this would have led to a far more efficient source of electricity; however, people looked the other way toward plutonium’s potential as a bomb. The US immediately relayed this information to scientist Robert Oppenheimer, who led the Manhattan Project with the objective of creating the bomb. At the end of its development, the “atomic” bomb was used to blow up two Japanese cities: Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The death toll on the day of the bombing was 240,000, 25% of the cities’ total population. Later, the radiation of the bomb wiped out another 65,000 people. During this event, the exciting potential of plutonium had nothing to do with helping people live with more lights. Second, knowledge can lead to a decrease in jobs for people. Today, machines have the ability to do many things without the help of a human. With a simple push of a button, people can sit back while the machine does its job. This is a phenomenal advance from the past few centuries. But at what cost? Since a task that once required 100 strongmen to accomplish now only takes one person that can push a button, countless numbers of people lose their jobs. Just two centuries ago during the Industrial Revolution, new factories and machines were developed and created in the US. These machines could accomplish feats that were inconceivable at the time, such as harvesting in less than an hour or spinning and weaving textiles at astounding speeds. Now, even women could join the workforce, since the physical strength of men was not required. However, because of this improvement, many were fired because they could not keep up with the machines; in the end, all of these people were forced into poverty. Third, the application of our knowledge has led us to disregard our environment. Several decades ago, no one knew that the environment was affected by machines and factories. Today, despite the fact that we know the Earth is dying, we continue to use gas and burn coal. This is because we have reached a point where we cannot live without such conveniences. Thomas Fuller, an English historian, stated, “We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.” In the same manner, we are ignoring the value of our planet and, unfortunately, people won’t fully realize the Earth’s value until it is turned into wastelands by the factories. In conclusion, knowledge can be a double-edged sword. It protects and improves people who use it well. However, when used in a careless manner, the sword of knowledge will cut the very person who is wielding it. Whether we use it to protect or destroy is in entirely our hands. If we want to decrease deaths, decrease poverty, and protect our world, knowledge must remain nothing but an asset of positive development.

Preludes and Rhapsody on a Windy Night , both composed in the year 1917, can both be interpreted as modernist writing as they both reject traditional forms of writing and explore the art of a rapidly transforming world of industrial development and urbanization. Within the two pieces, Eliot effectively reflects the world he lived and wrote in with the utilization of various language techniques to reinforce his perception on the corruption of environment, alienation of individuals and their state of mind. T.S Eliot’s poem, “Rhapsody on a Windy Night” is set in the city and describes a lonely nightwalker on the streets of an urban landscape. He makes use of motifs on several occasions to emphasize the alienation and state of mind of this strange man who is walking by himself in the early hours of the morning. The streetlamp mentioned several times throughout the poem can symbolize the only connection the character has with anything on the street. The light sourced from the lamp represents the only good in his world and the moments of potential hope that can only be found within its limits. This recurring symbol also focuses on the isolation of the individual in this space. The dark can be related to the vague, mysterious and the unknown. Where there is light, the association of clarity, security and the hope in the midst of darkness is made. These streetlamps punctuate his walk with life, demonstrating how the little hopes in the nightwalker’s life are only brief and goes away once he walks into the darkness, thereby giving the reader and insight into the nightwalker’s state of mind. Likewise, the moon mentioned in the poem creates a world where society feels fear in the dark. It takes away the sense of mind into the surreal, where darkness is perceived as eerie, disturbing and ambiguous. In Preludes, the isolation and separation of the main character is also evident. Sensory imagery in the poem draws attention to the individual in a cityscape. The poem addresses the issue of segregation from the rest of the world through the eyes of an anonymous person observing the city life on a winter’s evening. The diction of words such as “masquerades” implies the alienation of each citizen living in the suburban area. Similar to how masks are worn at masquerade balls to cover a person’s face, the masks implied by Eliot hide one’s individuality as well as the negative side of the human behaviour. This indication further mirrors the condition of city life in the age that Eliot lived in. The notion of a disguise creates an imaginary wall of distance between the people observed by the character in the poem, signifying the detachment of an individual from the city. On another note, “One thinks of all the hands that are raising dingy shades” emphasizes the perception that the individual has the need to close the blinds, therefore, shutting off from the outside world. In the seclusion of one’s own home, there is a more secure feeling and the mask can be taken off. The attempt for society to hide away one’s true identity from others in this poem can be interpreted as a means of withdrawal into solitude, reinforcing the negative effects of urbanization.

President Jimmy Carter attempted to increase U.S. crude production by scaling back the complex system of government regulation of the oil industry to allow domestic crude prices to rise. President Carter’s efforts at reform were stalled by a series of events in the Middle East: In December, 1977, riots broke out in Iran; they were followed by the Iranian Revolution and the overthrow of the shah in January, 1978. In September, 1980, Iran was invaded by Iraq. Together, these events disrupted the world’s crude oil supply. Iran had provided approximately 15 percent of internationally traded crude oil and 9 percent of U.S. crude imports before the revolution. The loss of Iranian crude oil— which were particularly “light” (low in wax content) and “sweet” (low in sulfur content) and thus inexpensive to refine into gasoline—shifted the market toward heavier, more sour crude oils that were more expensive to refine. U.S. refineries were able to produce less gasoline per day from these crude oils, so the decrease in supply of gas was greater than the decrease in supply of crude oil. The result of these events was soaring crude oil, gasoline, diesel, and home heating oil prices that led to a general economic decline in the United States. Inflation rose to a rate of more than 13 percent, and the U.S. unemployment rate reached 6.1 percent in 1979. As a result of the oil shortages, consumers were forced to wait in long lines to buy gasoline, and in some regions of the country, restrictions were placed on industrial energy use. Iranian and Iraqi oil production gradually recovered and partly eased the world crude shortage. However, most economists date the end of the energy crisis to President Ronald Reagan’s issuance of Executive Order 12287 on January 28, 1981, terminating federal price and allocation controls and leading to a lengthy decline in real crude prices as domestic crude production increased. Declining energy prices helped spur the economic recovery of the early 1980’s.
