when installing track lights do I have to connect the ground wire if there is no electic box in the ceiling? what I'm trying to do is run a track lighting fixture from the ceiling. There is no electric box where I am trying to install the lights. I thought maybe I could run a wire from the lights down the wall and connect a plug at the end of the wire to make the fixture run off of a wall outlet instead of a electric box in the ceiling. Do I still have to use the ground wire? if so, how do I do it? Is it safe to not use it? Thanks for your help & patience.
Track Lighting Wiring Question: Fixture has black/white - ceiling has black/white/red/ground? I recently bought a track lighting unit and have tried to replace the flourescent light box in my kitchen. The ceiling electrical box has wires for red, black, white, and a ground copper wire, but my new fixture only has the black and white. After reading countless posts on similar configurations, I wired white to white and black to red (assuming it was hot because it was used with last fixture). I left black alone and copper alone. Should I've done something differently (with ground specifically) because after reswitching at the breaker, nothing is powering with the unit? I should mention that unit (from Ikea) has cord that reaches out and sends current through metal track. If anyone is familiar with this set up, input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Shane
Plug in track lighting? I bought a ceiling track light with 3 directional lamps on it that I could just plug into a socket a couple years ago but can't seem to find any on-line. Is there a proper name for them that I am not using correctly to search for them? Anyone have a site or even just proper term for them. Just a ceiling track light with 3 or more directional lamps that plus into a socket rather than installed to the electrical system.
Installing Home Depot track lighting - Voltage Question? As the title states, I'm installing a standard track lighting system on my ceiling. It will be wired directly where a previously existing ceiling fan is located. I want it to be dimmable. My question is in the voltage and how I determine if I need a Magnetic Low Voltage Dimmer or a Electronic Low Voltage Dimmer? Which one will make a humming noise or give spikes in the dimming? Links would be great too. Thanks!
Installing a track light in a existing junction box for a ceiling fan? I have an existing junction box in the ceiling which I think is meant for a ceiling fan. I want to install a track light at the junction box but not sure if I can do that due to the voltage requirements. I have 4 wires in the box, I green, 1 red, 1 blue and I white. Can someone please help me and tell me what wires I need to connect.

What lighting should i use in a kitchen with a plank ceiling? I am remodeling a 1930s home with the original plank and beam ceiling. I'd like to put halogen lighting in the kitchen but am not sure what type of lighting I can use. The electrician has suggested track lighting, but i'd prefer something less obtrusive. there appears to be approx. 3 inches of space above the planks. does anyone have experience with this type of ceiling?
What are my best alternatives to ceiling light? Hi, I have no ceiling outlet in my office (9x11'). I've been using a floor lamp, but that's a rather poor light, even with a 100W bulb. Halogen torch lamp is bright, but it uses too much electricity. Running cable and breaking drywall on the ceiling is simply too much trouble for me, so I've been thinking a wall-mounted track lighting, which I can wire so that it's between same studs as the existing wall outlet. What is a good alternative for me?
electric wires poking thrue panneled ceiling, is it safe to use? I had 70's track lighting in kitchen and I removed one set today to replace with newly purchased ceiling light. When I removed the the 1x12x48 board that the track lighting was connected to the ceiling with, I was left with electric wires poking thru existing ceiling with no electricle box. Track Lighting installation? I'm looking to install track lighting in my apartment. Currently my apartment has one light fixture in the middle of the room. Or should I hire an electrician?
track lighting wiring problem, the light stays on, switches don't control it.? track lighting wiring problem, the light stays on, switches don't control it. there are two switches on the wall, one on each side of the room. I had a light in place before, and it worked fine, could on and then off from other switch, or vice versa. Now, i hooked up a NEW light today, and connected white to white wire, black to black, and ground to ground wires in the light switch, junction box on ceiling. I've got one other wire in the junction box, it's red. I don't think it was used before though - it has a marette on it. Please help. thanks.

how to install a track light on the ceiling from scratch ? I have just moved house, i have put up my dartboard. But the light bulb from the middle of the room isn't good enoug to light up the dartboard. I need to install a ceiling spotlight fixture, i think it's called track lighting. It has 3 halogen bulbs which i can light up the dartboard with to make playing darts much better. My question is how do i plug these into my existing electricity circuit? I'm assuming when i cut a hole out in the ceiling and screw the new lights in place i will run a cable into my attic then connect it to the power somehow, then i will have to cut my wall up to put a new switch in next to my other one for the main light then polyfill and repaint the wall ? Can someone please help me as i have absolutely no experiance with electrics and what i might need to buy to get the job done or how to connect the light to the electricity supple etc. My only other option is to pull out the lmain light move it 1 metre to the right and put in the track spotlights instead of the main light and use a lamp at night in that room. Thanks for any help on this matter, sorry if i'm not very clear about what i'm on about but i really have no idea what to do. rik.
How can I cut a strip of metal track lighting track that is too long? The metal track is standard, about one inch wide with a plastic core inside. I need to shorten it before installing on the ceiling and i am not sure how as I am new to this home improvement stuff and do not own a saw. What do I need? Thank you.
Any ideas how to disguise the lights on my ceiling fan? Had victorian shades in living room and I painted three small white hat boxes and gave the fan a more modern look. Now I want to do something with the three brass lights (they look like track lighting) on my ceiling fan in my bedroom. I don't have any ideas. They can't be removed, I just need to cover them with something. I can't find anything online.
Ceiling lighting help? I live in an apartment that has very little overhead lighting...none what so ever in our living room. It is very cave like once the sun goes down and I'm in search of a track lighting system or something similar that I can install. The issue is I am in search of a system that does not require hard wire installation and only requires a plug. Thanks in advance!
Is there such thing as a low-profile pendant fixture for track lighting? I need something that isn't directional (like a spotlight), but rather more like a regular light fixture that spreads light in all directions. And I want it to be low-profile, so it doesn't extend very far below the ceiling. If this exists, please direct me to a website with an example. I won't choose yours as best answer unless you give me a link.
To install low voltage track lighting, what components do I need? Transformer? Lights? Track? What else? The lighting websites don't tell me what I need and I want to hook it all into one dimmer switch. The room I have is approx 400 square feet with cathedral ceilings. I want to run the track on the beam down the middle of the ceiling and want to know what I'd need to accomplish a well light room. Thanks
lighting for an arch ceiling? We are purchasing an almost finished house, and in one room it has an arch ceiling element in the center of it running across the length of the room. The arch runs south to north and there is regular flat ceiling about 2 feet between it and the four walls of the room, with crown molding between the walls and ceiling. on the north wall, just inside the arch at the north-east and north-west ends there are open holes for lighting. How would you light this room? Someone suggested running molding along the arch and putting track lights in. any ideas? Thanks!
I need a 30' track lighting / cable track solution for kind of cheap? I'm moving into a great loft so I'm broke. But it has this awesome 30' brick wall and I am mounting my artwork via a cool ceiling mount hanging system. The only problem - I need a LONG track light to illuminate this project. But this place is very expensive so I need something VERY affordable. I'd like a low-volt dual cable system with 9 basic spot lights over 30' of cable, mounted straight from wall to wall, maybe 4 or 5 inches from the ceiling. I figure each light could be 30-50 watts and I was thinking halogen. I would also want to purchase a dimmer switch that could adjust this bad boy. I'd be retrofitting a standard ceiling mounted light to house the transformer. I have no idea where to start here - I don't (can't) pay a ton for this. But it will really finish my new pad if I can pull this off for under $500. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! :)
Question about track lighting? I am wanted to update the track lighting in our kitchen that has a high vaulted ceiling, the power supply currently is at the right hand end of the track strip and about a foot beyond that there is a beam on the ceiling. Many of the track lights I have seen in the stores the power supply is in the middle of the strip and has lights on either end. I measured lastnight and that won't work in my kitchen. My question is.. Can the power base on these be moved? http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100469758&N=10000003+90401+501401+4294966199#reviews This is an example of the type I am referring to. Thanks I am sorry.. I am not wanting to move the electricity I am wanting to move the mount on the new track light to fit where the old track is. I am looking for other track light options in the mean time. For some reason the idiot that designed our house thought a light needed to be a foot away from the wall . Thank you
