Is LED lighting good enough for lighting a marine coral tank? If it is what kind would be needed? I liked all of your answers! But the internet to Solaris link was the one!!! Thanks everyone!
LED lighting alternative for marine aquariums? I wanted to have a lighting unit for my aquarium made of LEDs (I know how to do DIY LED projects so that's not the issue). I wanted to know the proper wavelengths for morning, mid-day, and evening colors. Is some UV helpful too? I only need proper lighting for live rock and possibly some macro
How to create a Marine LED Circuit? I looked online for LED lights that you can mount under the boat and they run 100 dollars each! I know marine products are way overpriced so I was wondering to myself, I think this would not be too hard to do. How would I go about creating one with about 50 lights and a waterproof casing, and if it would be cheaper to create one.

LED Marine / Saltwater Aquarium Light? I was wondering whether its possible to do a custom made LED light since if u buy from the shop the real deal its around rm2500 for LED lighting 2ft. My aquarium measures 2x1x1ft Is it a must to use Luxeon types of LED ...which is 3W? Or can I put the 5mm LED at 0.2W with many instead to compensate for intensity? Any guide or tips on how i should make it ? E.g. numbers of LED, minimum LED rating.. Thanks! (In Malaysia) Its for corals which need optimum lighting. Not those really intense ones. For example.. anemone
Night lighting for a marine aquarium? My father currently has a 55g marine aquarium, which holds some fish (firetail goby, clown fish, a damselfish) along with invertebrates (peppermint shrimp coral banded shrimp, emerald crabs, hermit crabs, snails). The thing is, several of the things living in the tank prefer to be more active at night. He turns off the big light, and usually there's enough light coming in from another room that he can see general shapes moving around, but he would like to see more detail. Is there a light which can be used which would allow him to increase visibility, without disturbing the day/night cycle and sending the marine inhabitants back to various hiding spots? I was thinking of having him try a low power LED light, or maybe use a lamp which gives off only red light since that's on the lowest end of the spectrum.

12 volt lighting for Home? Just thinking thing over. Want to install a 120 volt AC to12 volt DC converter, as the ones found in most RV's. The 12 volt would be used power 12 volt light fixtures as one found in RV's, and Marine crafts. The 12 volts could be used with a solar panel. The solar panel would be used to charge a 12 volt battery(s), and the 12 volt battery could be used to power the lights during the night. I thought of using resistors for each light within the low voltage lighting electrical wires to control even distribution of lighting. The 12 volt distribution panel http://www.bestconverter.com/assets/imag... can as a battery charger when needed. This panel is rated a 50 amps. A few more 12 volt recessed lights http://www.swego.com/12_volt_recessed.ht... mostly rated at 10 watts and these are xenon lights. The electrical lines would be anywhere from 10 feet to the longest run of 70 feet. The electrical wire would be 12/2 CL2 rated for low voltage wires. The 12 volt distribution panel will power the lights and can be used to charge a 12 volt battery when needed. I would then add a toggle switch to shut of power to solar panel when not in use. The reason I choose the 12 volt distribution panel because this system had the built in led lights for the blown fuse detection and the fuses are a safety feature in case things go bad with lights or 12 volt fixtures. There for twelve of the 10 watt recessed lights will add up to 120 watts. 120 watts divided by 12 volts will equal to 10 amps. This would still leave 40 amps for landscape light or other 12 volt lights. There are options on adding 12 volt fans, and 12 volt appliances. If needed I would add extra auxillary 12 volt transformer to power the heaver amperage fixtures .... etc... I'm thinking this setup would pay for it self with a short time once in use. what do you think? "Hope this helps explain why 12 vdc systems are not economic or practical on a residential basis." please elaborate on this answer. This will be for walkway lighting, nice and low lumens. This will be for areas that just need a little lighting. I guess I should of added that my house will be wired for 120 volts thru out the home and outside of home. For the better lighting and lumens. The 12 volts would be for general and walk area lighting.
Need help starting a solar lighting system? I was thinking about setting up a simple solar powered lighting system. I was planning on using a small 12 V LED light and hooking it up to a battery, to be charged by a solar panel. My question, at this point, is about which battery type to use. I know I can get various golf cart batteries, in either 6, 8, or 12 V. Or I can go with "marine" batteries, in 12 V. I know that more batteries means more capacity. However, what I'm not sure about is which type of batteries to use. Can anyone offer any type of help, please.
I need to step down a marine battery from 12vdc to 10vdc 350mA? i would like to run some led lites from a deep cell marine battery, the 110vac transformer that came with the lights has an output of 10 VDC with 350mA. the battery is 12VDC, 450 cold cranking amps, 550 amps straight use. the wire i am using at present is cat 5e.any help would be much appreciated. Thank You
How do I attach an LED bulb to a solar panel, battery and a switch? This seems simple enough but nobody knows how to do it. I need to make a lighting system for a boat. I want it to be solar powered. All I need is a way to get a solar panel attached to a battery for storage and then a switch so I can turn it on at night. The boat is wired for battery power and I have yet to find a simple lighting system that I can just make my own light fixture for. There are so many choices if I want it for a garden but for marine applications they will rust. please help,.
How long will this Battery run these 6 led lights? http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02827524000P?mv=rr I have this 12 Marine/RV 12v battery listed above in the link provided. It is rated at 575 cold cranking amps. Amp Hours at 20 Hour Rate: 105. I want to run six 12v led lights that are 2.1 watts each for a total of 12.6 watts. How long will this battery run these six led lights for? Also... I am going to have a 15 watt solar panel charger on the battery. Will this be enough to charge the battery in between uses? The answer I am looking for is either a hour or minute figure in how long my battery will power these lights for.
29 Gallon Reef Tank Lighting? I am setting up a 29 gallon reef tank and want the best possible lighting. A friend of mine recommended the Marine Land Double Bright LED's and I have heard a lot about LED's but am not sure which ones are the best. Any ideas? I really want my tank to "pop" (and look better than my friends!) HEHE! Thanks for your help!
My filter, and live plants.? My filter doesn't seem to have enough suction power, I saw a piece of food float by within 1 inch and it didn't pick it up. Its a Bio-wheel 100 and it came in a 10 gallon marine-land LED light kit! With a heater as well. I have an ADF, some guppies, and platies in the tank. They all get along great and the tank stays clean from what I've noticed. But also, the filter that came with the 10 gallon had like...an extension on it that has like, a vent think that you can open and close. What is that? In the instructions it said to put it on, but with it on it doesn't even fit in the tank, its too big and touches the bottom before the filter is in place. So I just took it off and put on the regular filter tube cover. Is this okay? Or is that extension crucial? I have no idea!! My other question was about live plants, right now I have 1 small and 1 medium-large ornaments in there, a terra cotta pot (only 2 inches) for the frog, and 3 mid sized fake plants. I would like to get some more plants, even replace the plastic ones with real ones, but when I got my fish, I was looking at the live plants in those gel tubes, and she said that you need a specific light for the plants. I've heard you don't need a "specific light" just light. Like I said my tank uses marine-lands new LED technology, which has both a sun and moon light (pretty neat!). The plant's I was looking at were like umbrella plants, some tropical fern, and amazon swords. Is it true these need a specific light? Or will mine do? The tank also gets indirect sunlight during the day. Also with live plants do you need plant conditioner and special substrate? Sorry for asking so many little questions! Hope to hear back soon! :)
I want to add more fish and plants, can I do this? Plants: Right now I have 3 fake plants, they are nice looking but I really want live plants! I was just wondering how much of a hassle it is? Do I need to get special substrate, fertilizer, and a light hood for live plants? Or will they be fine with my Marine-land LED light I have on it already, and the small gravel I have for substrate? I don't want fancy plants either! Just some things like Banana plants, Anubis Nana, and possibly Amazon sword. (I also plan for a piece of Malaysian driftwood with some random plant on it, I think it's java fern.) I also have a Real Marimo Algae ball that is doing great! But they don't have roots either... Regarding Fish: *Please don't troll, make fun of, or dis my current set up! I did a lot of research in choosing my fish for my first tank and it is doing Wonderful as is!! Is is a 10 gallon, marine-land tank with a Bio wheel 100 filter rated for a 20 gallon and a 50 watt heater that does great! I have in it 3 fancy guppies of assorted colors, 1 red wag and 1 sunburst wag platy. They all school together too which is kinda neat, I have never seen that with different species! Anyways it seems a bit... Empty right now. I have seen tanks on youtube that have twice as many fish as I do! (Granted they don't know what they are doing but they look nice. So I was wondering if 1 or 2 more fish would be okay! *Disregard the youtube statement, I Feel dumb now. Anyways!!! I wanted to add possibly 1 more guppy, or 1 more platy. They are all male fish in the tank so I don't have to worry about babies, and whatever I get will be a male as well! That was 1 option or because they are so small I wanted some pygmy corydas catfish. (The ones that grow less than an inch) I know they need schools so Could I do 3 of those? It would make my tank look awesome and add so much depth to it! But if it is already stocked just let me down easy ;) I can handle it!
Just got a brand new Marine land 10 gallon tank! What should I add to it? I just bought the Marine Land LED aquarium kit 10. It is glass, has a day and night cycle light, a 50 watt heater, and a Penguin Bio wheel 100! I'm so excited! My original plan was to do a Betta community tank, but I realized I want more color and more action in the tank, so I have now dismissed the Betta Idea. For my 10 gallon tank which fish would you all suggest? I really like Platies! Especially sunburst, and Micky mouse Platies! I also like gobbies, Tetras, DWARF gourami's and most all of the bottom feeder type fish! (don't know if those are all spelled right). Which combination of those fish could I do in my 10 gallon? I would also like some shrimp and a snail. I was thinking I would do a group of 3 Platies, and maybe 5-6 small gobbies, and a bottom feeder type fish (Cory cat, pleco, etc.) With my shrimp and snail. But i'm just excited! Which would be the best combination and how many of each of those fish do I need? I know things like tetras and gobbies need to be in medium groups but how many do I need for Gourami's and Platies? Also, on a side note if you wouldn't mind answering. Regarding plants. My room is asian zen themed and I would like to add bamboo to the tank along with other live plants! Is this possible? If so can I just go to walgreens and buy some bamboo and stick it in the rocks and it will live? Also with other live aquatic plants do I need, oh, I forget what its called but its a type of gravel thats like 25 bucks, It says I need it for my plants. Do I? or is it an option! Please be thorough and descriptive! Thank you so much! I know I'm asking a lot but you will be helping a new found fish FANATIC! :) Thanks!! P.s. With cycling my tank do I need to add a dechlorinator to the water at all? And what is the significance of the bio-wheel anyways? !READ ME! I can't beleive I did this... Every time I said Gobbies, I meant Guppies!! I want Guppies! Hahaha sorry that probably was really confusing to read!
Truck Modification Suggestions? Anyone willing to help out a Marine with some ideas? I just recently got out of the Marines and moved back home to Texas. I just bought a 2002 Lincoln Blackwood from my Credit Union here in Dallas about a week and a half ago. Right now it's still all stock. The truck is fully loaded with all gray leather and black wood trim interior, 6 Disc Pioneer CD changer, Navigation System, 18" wheels, and a 5.4L 300hp V8. It's only got 54K miles on it. Believe it or not, it's the first truck I've owned, I've always had a car. For a 25 year old Iraq vet, it's not that bad of a truck in all honesty. It handles and drives really good. I've got an extra $8,500 to spend on some mods for it, plus I work in the oil fields, so that's good money too. I was thinking at least getting smoked out or LED tail lights, and maybe on something that can boost performance in the engine. I know a lot of Ford parts can be used on Lincolns too. I added a few pictures of my truck if you want to take a look to give y'all some ideas: http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae192/JD1986/JDs%20Blackwood/Lincoln1.jpg http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae192/JD1986/JDs%20Blackwood/Lincoln2.jpg http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae192/JD1986/JDs%20Blackwood/Lincoln3.jpg http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae192/JD1986/JDs%20Blackwood/Lincoln4.jpg http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae192/JD1986/JDs%20Blackwood/Lincoln5.jpg http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae192/JD1986/JDs%20Blackwood/Lincoln6.jpg http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae192/JD1986/JDs%20Blackwood/Lincoln7.jpg http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae192/JD1986/JDs%20Blackwood/Lincoln8.jpg So if y'all have any suggestions or thoughts for any kind of modifications just throw 'em in here. Will 400 watt inverter powering a 20 watt light drain battery faster than 2 100 watt inverters powering 2x10W? I want to run 6 strands of LED X-Mas lights off a car/marine battery. You can plug 3 strands together so that only one outlet is needed for all 3 strands. Each group of three strands uses about 10 watts. So I need two outlets that each will power 10 watts. If I buy a 400 watt inverter, it has two outlets so it can run both sets of 3 light strands. Or I could buy, for the same price, two 100 watt inverters that have only one outlet each. I would run them both off the same battery. So which would make my battery last longer? Running a 400 watt inverter to power two 10 watt loads or running two 100 watt inverters each powering a 10 watt load? Only two options - run 2, 10 watt loads on one 400 watt inverter or 1, 10 watt load each on two 100 watt inverters. Both options powered by a single, identical battery. Thanks.

80gallon marine stocking ideas? I'll be ordering my 80gallon tank soon, I am currently running a 22gallon nano marine with my breeding pair of ocellaris clowns. So I need some fish suggestions! I'm particulary interested in Fairy/flasher wrasse, anthias and Basslets The tank will have 30KG of liverock, or 66lbs if you prefer. will have 10kg live sand mixed with 10kg silica sand. 20gallon sump with 6000l/h return pump, skimmer, calcium reactor, nitrate/phosphate reactor. It will also feature some crushed liverock as extra biological filtration, and phosex, nitrex and bio balls added in. I will also have my heater in here. Lighting is as follows: 1x150w metal halide (HQI), 2x65w T5 blue, 6x1w LED moonlight I am definitly putting my breeding pair of clownfish into this tank - what else would you suggest? I may try to get an achilies tang - he may get too large for the tank but by then I'll more than likely have upgraded. Other than that I'm open to your suggestions! Oh I may also try a mandarin fish once the tank is fully mature. tank will be a coral reef with SPS, LPS, soft and poylpd corals - so reef safe is a must. Recommend me any fish, not just wrasse, anthias or basslets! ;D No groupers, hawkfish, fox face or rabbit fish please! thanks!

patent question PLEASE HELP? ok so im trying to set up my very small online business of making LED lighting for aquariums and i ran across the most ridiculous patent ever. using LEDs over a marine tank. i cant believe someone can even patent that. thats like me saying im going to patent sleeping on a pillow. its really ridiculous.then theres another patent by the same company of placing LEDs on a flat surface and using electrical current to turn them on. another ridiculous patent. thats basically patenting turning on a light switch. and third is using one or more lights to create a hue of lighting in a liquid. so this company orbitec is really getting me mad. but my question is. i know commercial companies have to pay royalties to them but i built my own led fixture for my personnel tank. does this mean im breaking a patent. and say my friend wants me to build one for his tank am i breaking there stupid patent "the method of using LEDs over a marine setting"? and if I do decide to continue with my company how much are royalty charges and how does it work. do i need a lawyer or something or do i just pay them and thats it?
I have a small rv 17 feet by 8.5 feet, some nights I will need to run my electric heater for a few hours.? I have 6 deep cycle marine batteries permanently connected to a 120 watt solar panel with a charge controller and power inverter. I don't have much running on this system other than LED lighting and thats few lights. I also have a PC that i use for a few hours some days, and a small flat panel TV used for 1-2 hours a day. Some nights I know I will need to run my little electric heater just to warm me up while I sleep or fall asleep. I don't plan to leave it on longer than 4 hours at a time at night mostly. I have noticed that my batteries recharge very fast and I don't think this would drain them completely if I use the heater responsibly. What can you guys suggest, I'm not to eager to get more propane burning, since I already have a propane stove. I noticed that it takes one 1pound propane tank every 3-4 hours to run a propane heater so thats not a cheap option. Can someone share some knowledge pls.
My Yellow Tang's fins have fallen off? I have had a yellow tang for 2 years, last year his fins fell off. I have had this tank set up for 3 years now, I have a uv sterilizer, protein skimmer, wet dry sump, wave maker, coral life led lighting, a 90 gal tank, tons of live rock, tons of hiding spaces. The levels are all good. I have never lost a fish in this tank, and the tang has been alive for a year without fins! I have treated with a couple medications, one turned tank greenish blue, I used rid Ich, and Mela fix. The fish eats, swims happily, gets along with all the other fish. He has lots of places to swim and hide. He gets 8 different kinds of food, Seaweed, spinach, formula two flakes and formula two pellets, mysis shrimp, marine frozen salad, Tera min salt pellets, and new life spectrum. I have checked for stray voltage with my voltmeter. I have checked my levels, I do water changes every two weeks with a gravel vac. He eats all the time, he swims around happily, but his back fin is gone, his top and bottom fins are little sticks and his face turns red sometimes and he shakes around. Nobody in the tank bothers him, he is the king fish in the tank. Is there something I can feed him or treat him with that will help him regrow his fins?

Coral Reef Tank lights? I am planning to add some corals (3 to 4) to my 10 gallon marine tank. Will it be fine if I add the following lighting set up. Marineland LED Double Bright Lighting System, Includes 6 x 1W white and 3 x blue LEDs
Will this work as a light? 10 POINTS? I have a 15gallon freshwater tropical fish tank and ive got a normal glo 15w sunglo light which i turn on when get up in the morning and turn of at night.. but as ive got the heater a filter an air pump and the light and also a clock plugged in its getting expensive to run... bearing in mind im 14 years old and im living at home and i don't want to burn up a whooping big bill for my parents! My idea is to not put on my light all day and buy a LED light (30cm long) ... and run that until later on in the evening? Will this be cheaper than running a big light above .. and will it be ok for tropical freshwater fish ( not marine) If not have you done anything similar that you can share or what you suggest Thanks Mike

Betta with Ich and something else? My betta in my 4.7 gallon tank currently has heaps of white spots, he has also lost his rich blue colour and its more a browny colour. His tip of his tail is grey and it has phomy white stuff on it. I quickly put the temp up to 30 C and added some marine salt (1.001 SG). The tank has a little filter (powerhead), a air stone, a heater, 2 Plants (Val), a LED light, Sand substrate, ship centrpiece and java moss. Tomorrow morning i will replace the sand with gravel, and clean the tank out. I will put my betta in a spare 2.5 gallon. I will also change my filter with a sponge filter. Should i put my betta in the spare tank over night? What Medication do i get for ich and fungus? And any advice is appreciated. Ps i am changing sand with gravel cause the water changes will be easier.

Finding Nemo - Blue Tang and Clown Fish Compatibility? Hello, I have been keeping tropical fish now for some considerable time and i think its about the right time to make the move to Marine fish. I have a 60litre BiOrb with the LED light and I love the colour compatibility of (i hate to say it) the clown fish and the blue tang (Nemo and Dory from Finding Nemo) now the wife wants a "nemo" and clown fish are very beautiful so im happy to do so. But can i really mix it with a blue tang? Also what clean up crew can i put into the tank that are pretty looking, if they exist? Also i know everyones reply about hating BiOrbs so please spare me. The wife wants it done in the BiOrb lol .. that wont be changing. But i do appreciate your advice on it anyway... Also if i put a clown fish in the tank is it ok to have only one rather than a pair? Thanks I know the orb is far from ideal, but the wife wants it that way so all i can do is take best care of the fish. I have since been telling here we can stretch to clown fish but nothing more from the movie as its just to unkind on the fish. What do you reccomend i stock with the clown and do i need a pair of clowns. unfortunately its the Orb and nothing else :( Ok, so i have established that the BiOrb is not a fantastic tank for Marine life, however it is the tank we will be using so nothing can be done about that. I have also figured that a Blue Tang is not apporpriately sized for a 60 litre BiOrb. Im going to go ahead with clown fish in the tank and i will probably go with the suggestion of 2? does anybody have any stocking suggestions they can share? any ideas on clean up crew too? :) Thanks
