12 Volt Led Lighting Knowledge Base
12 volt lighting for Home? Just thinking thing over. Want to install a 120 volt AC to12 volt DC converter, as the ones found in most RV's. The 12 volt would be used power 12 volt light fixtures as one found in RV's, and Marine crafts. The 12 volts could be used with a solar panel. The solar panel would be used to charge a 12 volt battery(s), and the 12 volt battery could be used to power the lights during the night. I thought of using resistors for each light within the low voltage lighting electrical wires to control even distribution of lighting. The 12 volt distribution panel http://www.bestconverter.com/assets/imag... can as a battery charger when needed. This panel is rated a 50 amps. A few more 12 volt recessed lights http://www.swego.com/12_volt_recessed.ht... mostly rated at 10 watts and these are xenon lights. The electrical lines would be anywhere from 10 feet to the longest run of 70 feet. The electrical wire would be 12/2 CL2 rated for low voltage wires. The 12 volt distribution panel will power the lights and can be used to charge a 12 volt battery when needed. I would then add a toggle switch to shut of power to solar panel when not in use. The reason I choose the 12 volt distribution panel because this system had the built in led lights for the blown fuse detection and the fuses are a safety feature in case things go bad with lights or 12 volt fixtures. There for twelve of the 10 watt recessed lights will add up to 120 watts. 120 watts divided by 12 volts will equal to 10 amps. This would still leave 40 amps for landscape light or other 12 volt lights. There are options on adding 12 volt fans, and 12 volt appliances. If needed I would add extra auxillary 12 volt transformer to power the heaver amperage fixtures .... etc... I'm thinking this setup would pay for it self with a short time once in use. what do you think? "Hope this helps explain why 12 vdc systems are not economic or practical on a residential basis." please elaborate on this answer. This will be for walkway lighting, nice and low lumens. This will be for areas that just need a little lighting. I guess I should of added that my house will be wired for 120 volts thru out the home and outside of home. For the better lighting and lumens. The 12 volts would be for general and walk area lighting.
pc power supply to power 12 volt outdoor led lights? I have a parts pc that I'm not using. I recently was given some low voltage outdoor l.e.d. lights. From what i've read the lights need a transformer to power them. With these lights being l.e.d.s, the wattage of the bulbs is only 0.375 each x 8 lights for a total wattage requirement of 3 watts. They are also 12 volt. The power supply in the old pc says 12 volt @13 amps. Will this work? or will the amperage be too much? The wiring will be roughly 50 feet long and 14-16 gauge strand copper.
Making a 12 volt led circuit? I want to install some led lights behind my gauges in my car to change the color. Regular incandescent bulbs do not offer the color I want. I want to purchase some leds and resistors from radio shack and do it custom because I will have better control over where the lighting goes. I am a little rusty on Ohm's law and need some help. I have read on some forums that they used 20000 mcd led bulbs and said they used a 1/4 watt resistor. I need the ohm rating. If it is a 12 volt system in my car, what resistor should I use. The system goes up to a little over 14 volts when the car is running. The instrument cluster has a 7.5 amp fuse in it for the lighting. I have not tested actual amps with the incandescent bulbs in it. I have leds in there now, and I have not tested amps. The resistors are built in to the leds I have now, so I cannot separate the two and test them separately. I know mcd and Mcd refer to the brightness of the bulb. I just need to know is there any other rating for leds to figure out what resistor to use? This will be wired in paralell. I know the formula for a parallel circuit, but if a diode has a forward voltage of 3 volts, would only 4 be allowed on a 12v circuit?
12 Volt vs. 120 Volt Lighting / Controls? So I am currently working on an insane lighting project for my entertainment center / "dragon" computer, and have come across a problem. So my setup is as follows. I am designing a switchboard that will house toggle switches for various LED lights and accents. Their will be a master switch that powers the other switches, which will in turn power each set of lights. The lights I have are 12 volt (DC) And it seems that the switches are DC as well. So my question is, how do I run this system in a house (120V)?
How to make a led price sign? Looking to make a 3 digit price sign (ex. 2.59) out of 12 volt, 12" led light bars, using 7 bars for each digit. Want to be able to change each number. How can you do it or where can I find plans for the controller. Thanks
14 Volt LED lights? Hi i just got 6 little LED lights on ebay an on the wires on them says 14 Volts an i want to use them in my car an i know how to wire up 12 Volt stuff but dont know whats all required to wire up those 14 Volt LED lights? Or is it even possible to wire them up to work properly?
Connecting multiple 12V LED lights to one power source? I do not know very much about electricity, but I do know how to solder and do the mechanical portion of this problem. I have multiple (4) 12 volt LED light strips with a positive and negative wire. I want to be able to attach all of these to a single, portable power source (battery or battery pack). 1) Do I need to have 48 volts of energy output? 2) What is the maximum voltage I can use without blowing out the lights? 3) What batteries would be the best for this purpose 4) Is it even possible for me to connect these multiple lights to a single power source?
I am wiring LED lighting using A/C? I am wanting to wire my 12 volt strand of LED lights to an AC current plug. How would i go about doing this? Below is a link to the LED strand http://www.dealextreme.com/productimages/sku_7556_1.jpg
how would i isntall a 12v strip of led lights in my car? i found these 12 volt led stips lights on ebay and they have 2 wires at the end a ground and 12v line but the title says there for cars and stuff but what could i hook the 12v cable to i have no idea how to power it.. if it helps i have a 93 ford escort ill put the link below to show you what im talking about http://cgi.ebay.com/24-LED-Strip-Car-Lights-Flexible-Grill-Light-Red-/360243213095?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e02b3327
Anybody have (or can design) a Knight Rider 12 LED Schematic? A really tough question/challenge for those electronic savvy people out there: I have 12 SUPER Bright LED's and a 12-Volt power source. Is there a circuit schematic available online that will let me use all 12 LED's and light them up like that famous Knight Rider car (KITT) from the '80's? Notes: ---the LED's require about 5 Volts for max light intensity, but a little less is acceptable, so we can say 2V to 5V ---I have access to random IC's (LM555CN/NE555N/74154N) just to name a few, plus numerous resistors/capacitors/diodes (or buying is always an option) ---I have a good understanding of circuits, but I am in the early stages of being able to design them. So any kind of schematic will do (as long as it is clear) ---To make this an more challenging question, the preferred display involves the LED's to turn on (as it cycles) and to FADE off (just like the show's car) Thanks in advanced –O.
How long will a 3 volt led bulb stay on running off a 12 volt battery? I had this idea for a while to build a rechargeable multi purpose/portable emergency light, but having problems with the math. So here's my problem. I have a 3000 mAh 12 volt rechargeable battery source connected to an adjustable volt regulator that outputs 3 volts. The regulator is connected a 3 volt LED bulb that draws 50 mA. If I ran this light non-stop, how long will this light run before the battery goes dead or need to be recharged? BONUS QUESTION: How long will this set up last if I used 4 LEDs instead of 1? Thanks in advance! EDIT: So I'm confused. the first answerer says NOT to use a regulator (and use resisters instead) but the second answerer says using a voltage regulator is fine. WHICH IS IT?
what would be the best way to connect a battery to about 10 LED lights? I have about 9-12 LED lights that are 2.1 volts with a max of 3 volts. I also have a 9v battery. I want to know hwo I can maximize the number of lights to the 9v battery with out over charging the lights. I was thinking of putting 2 sierise of 4 lights or 3 serise of 4 ligths in a parallel order. Is that the way to go?
led lights for growing!? the led lights on the market are 600$ or more.is there a alternative to those lights like for example ,12 volts car led lights that are used for the brakes and the white lights in front of the car. what led colour would be best for growing? would my 12 volts idea work? would i get enough lumens out of those lights? thank you in advance, any help or suggestions would help.
Circuitry 12 volt 8 AAA batteries LED indicater? So I was wondering, using some leds, transistors, resistors, etc how can I make a power level that will detect the level of the batteries(8 AAA=12V DC) using leds and some other parts? Is there a way to do this without using programmed chips and all? like for example when there is 12v all leds will light, but when it = 4v 4 out of 8 leds will light instead and etc... Thanks.
Converting a 12 volt dc device to 110 home current? I have been trying to come up with an economical way to provide LED moon light to my aquariums. I just happened to run across some reasonably priced LED strips. But they are set up for automotive use and a 12 volt dc power supply. What I am wanting to know is, is there a way I can use the lights with standard home current?
Flex LED installation? I recently purchased a set of 12 volt flex led lights to put on my motorcycle http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_FlexLED-24%22-Blue-Alpena_6460048-P_N3157A_A%7CGRP2044____ I was planning on splicing them into my tail light or signals but after much hunting, I could not find a good place to splice the wires together. What I want to know is if I could somehow attach them directly to the battery, and install a fuse as well, without causing any problems with my bike. thanks
I bought a led light for my car HELP? These are the directiones Now you need to determine a good location to hook up your new led. Use a 12 volt test light and find either a constant 12+ volt power source (back of cigarette lighter and or a spot in your vehicles fuse box) Well, I need to hook it up through a switch I guess, to a power supply and then ground it somehow, How do I perform this? Ok, I'm a beginner with all of this... I don't know technical terms What I have is the light with two wires attached ( connected) qhich then split at the end. One goes to 12 volt, other goes to ground. Now can you help?
installing 12v led light strip to car? a friend got me one of these: http://www.ledlight.com/flexible-led-light-strip-12-volt-dc.aspx i am a car guy, but i don't have much wiring experience. the packaging says that it's '12v hardwire'. i want to install this on my dashboard and keep the wires out of sight. i have a 2003 ford taurus. can anyone give me instructions for installing this?
How do i wire my 2.6 v dc LED to a 12 v battery? i have two LED 2.6v dc 28mA 10mcd ,and i want to connect it as a light on my atv which is 12 volt..what size resistor do i need,to make it work, and what circuit should i use, parallel or series MERRY CHRISTMAS, thank you
