Track Lighting Fixture Knowledge Base
How to install new track lighting and light fixture.? My husband and I have never installed any type of light fixture before. We just bought a house with a large kitchen. There is only one celing fan in the middle. We would like to put track lighting in by the stove and prep area and some sort of celing fixture over the kitchen table. Is it very complicated to install new fixtures? It always looks easy on HGTV, but I know those are professionals.
Is there such thing as a low-profile pendant fixture for track lighting? I need something that isn't directional (like a spotlight), but rather more like a regular light fixture that spreads light in all directions. And I want it to be low-profile, so it doesn't extend very far below the ceiling. If this exists, please direct me to a website with an example. I won't choose yours as best answer unless you give me a link.
Where is a good place to get low voltage track lighting fixtures? I just moved into a house that has low voltage track lighting...or at least that's what the guy at Lowe's told me when I showed him one of the lights. I'd like to replace the light fixtures, but Lowe's doesn't carry them. Where is a good place to get these things? I'd like a modern look as opposed to the old can & bulb set up I have.
Track Lighting Wiring Question: Fixture has black/white - ceiling has black/white/red/ground? I recently bought a track lighting unit and have tried to replace the flourescent light box in my kitchen. The ceiling electrical box has wires for red, black, white, and a ground copper wire, but my new fixture only has the black and white. After reading countless posts on similar configurations, I wired white to white and black to red (assuming it was hot because it was used with last fixture). I left black alone and copper alone. Should I've done something differently (with ground specifically) because after reswitching at the breaker, nothing is powering with the unit? I should mention that unit (from Ikea) has cord that reaches out and sends current through metal track. If anyone is familiar with this set up, input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Shane
Can I convert a recessed light fixture to power a track light system? My hallway has 5 recessed can lights each with a 75watt bulb operated on the same switch. I would like to install a 5-bulb halogen track light in the middle of the hallway to illuminate wall art. Can I remove the bulb and insert from the middle cannister fixture, cut the wires to the bulb receptacle and use the same wires to power up the track light. The track light with 5 bulbs will consume 150 watts through a low voltage transformer. Is this safe? The cannister light sticker says 75-watts maximum.
Track Lighting installation? I'm looking to install track lighting in my apartment. Currently my apartment has one light fixture in the middle of the room. I want to replace this light fixture with a set of track lights on either side of the room and a ceiling fan where the original fixture is. Is this something that a relative novice can do? Or should I hire an electrician?
Replacing Track Light Fixture... Extra Wires From The Ceiling Electrical Box? I'm replacing a single bulb light fixture with a 3 bulb track light fixture... When I took out the old fixture, there were 2 black and 1 white wires attached to the fixture's black wire, and there were 2 white wires attached to the fixtures white wire... There was an extra black wire on its own... I'm confused as to which wires I should attach to which wires... In total there are 3 black wires and 3 white wires coming from the ceiling's electrical box, and there are 3 black wires and 3 white wires coming from the 3 bulb track fixture... Your suggestions would be much appreciated... Thanks, -Andrew I tried attaching the 3 white wires from the ceiling electrical box to the 3 white wires from the light fixture and I did the same with the 6 black wires and grounded it as suggested... but when I did this there was a sizzling sound and the the switch flipped off shutting off the power to the fixture...any ideas why this might have happened? In electrician terminoligy, the breaker "tripped"
Is there a lighting fixture for the bathroom that can just be plugged in? My girlfriend says the lighting in our bathroom sucks, and I tend to agree. We are in a rental, so doing any kind of electrical work is out of the question. Is there some type of good bathroom lighting that comes with a cord to just plug it in? Perhaps a 3 bulb track lighting type thing? I'm electrically challenged, so any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Where can I get cheap track lighting? Help! It is dark in my office ;-) I need track lighting in a room that is in the center of my home (it always seems dark). I'm on a tight budget. They don't technically have to slide. 5 or 10 years ago I found a good deal on "track lighting" that does not slide, each "track" was available with either 2 or 3 'pointable' light fixtures. They where only around $30 each. I can't seem to find anything in that price range now.
when installing track lights do I have to connect the ground wire if there is no electic box in the ceiling? what I'm trying to do is run a track lighting fixture from the ceiling. There is no electric box where I am trying to install the lights. I thought maybe I could run a wire from the lights down the wall and connect a plug at the end of the wire to make the fixture run off of a wall outlet instead of a electric box in the ceiling. Do I still have to use the ground wire? if so, how do I do it? Is it safe to not use it? Thanks for your help & patience.
Does this type of lighting fixture exist? I want something that plugs into a standard light bulb socket, that is just another socket that has an adjustable angle. Also I would like that other socket to have a directional shade around it. Like the kinds of light you see on track lighting in restaurants. If this exists where can I pick one up?
How do you calculate amp draw on low voltage track light? Hey Yahoo Experts! I have a halogen track light fixture. It uses a transformer to convert 120 vac to 12v. The fixture has 5 20 watt lamps. How do you calculate the amp draw? Maybe I made my question sound like a riddle, but it's not. Since the voltage was stepped down from 120 to 12, which voltage do I use to calulate the amp draw with 5 20 watt bulbs on the fixture. I don't have an amp meter.
Can I install track lighting through an outlet? I want to install track lighting in my apartment. Unfortunately, we don't have an overhead fixture; I have an outlet on the ground that's controlled by the light switch, made for standing lamps and such. Are there track lights out there that work like a lamp, that can be connected by an outlet? I'm willing to put up with the power cable, I'd just have it hugging the corners.
How can I hide a hole from a previous light fixture? I recently installed track lighting in my room. Unfortunately, the old fixture was recessed, and left a hole in the ceiling about 6 inches in diameter. The track lighting sits on a square plate that fits right inside this hole (each corner touches the rim of the hole). I will only be living in the room for a year, so I don't want to get too involved, but I do want it to look half decent - any advice?
Replace light fixture with switch/receptacle? My daughter has a very old light fixture on the wall in her room with an old unpolarized outlet on it. She has track lighting on her ceiling which is not hard wired, but plugs into the light fixture. Is it possible to replace the old light fixture with a receptacle switch without any extra wiring? She wants to be able to plug in the track lights, but turn them on an off with the switch, since the track lights are her main lighting in the room and struggling in the dark to find the outlet is not her cup of team, and could be dangerous. She would also like to be able to dim the track lights. Is this possible? Is there such a thing as a receptacle dimmer switch? Would I have to do additional wiring, or could I just wire the outlet to the existing line, then wire the outlet to the switch? Thanks in advance for the help! NYS. Looks like someone is offended by my question. Oh well, misery loves company! There shouldn't be any confusion. I said the outlet was on the light fixture. The light fixture can turn on and off, but the switch is on the fixture it's self. No idea of turning off light switch turns off outlet because light switch is broken in the on position and we just moved here. I would assume it does. I also was asking about a receptacle switch not just an outlet. I'm talking about an outlet and switch in one box. No one also seemed to be able to answer if the switch could be a dimmer, and would dim the track lights that were plugged into the outlet. I know an out let can be wired to turn on and off with a switch, just not sure if it the outlet could be dimmed, or if replacing the fixture with an outlet switch combo would need additional in wall wiring.
Track lighting problems!! Help!!? Here is the situation.. I removed a fluorescent light fixture from my ceiling. The white wire and the black wire had been extended by a cap to make the fixture work. The fixture was not grounded and was only attached to the two wires. I am now installing track lighting. I look in the ceiling box and I see: 2 white wires that were capped in with the white extention wire 1 black wire that was extended 2 bluish colored wires that are capped to eachother I removed the white and the black extention so I now have the following in the box: 2 white wires capped to eachother. 2 bluish wires capped to eachother. 1 black wire My track lighting has a white, black and green wire. I attached the white wire to the two white wires that are capped together. I attached the black wire to the single black wire. I attached my ground green wire to the two capped bluish wires. I assemble the rest of the lighting and turn back on the power and... I break my circuit breaker. I checked my connections and all points of the lighting. Nothing seems to be wrong but my wiring. My questions... Am I wired correctly? Anyone have a reason as to why I would have spliced neutral and ground wires? Am I fair to assume that the bluish wires are my ground? Why do I keep blowing my breaker? Do I need to ground my track lighting? What consequences do I have if I do not ground? and finally... How do i fix it?!?!? Heh.. I know it is a lot of questions to ask... I would appreciate any help. :)
Inexpensive track lighting or similar? A few years ago I bought some inexpensive track lighting, actually the lights where permanently fixed, but there was a 3' section and a 2' section that used regular bulbs and they where cheap; each whole fixture was maybe $25ish. Where can I find inexpensive track lighting?
How do I install a new light fixture? I need to installing a new ceiling light in the living room. There is an existing single switch on the wall that operates some track lighting in the kitchen. Can I convert this into a double switch and have the other switch operate the ceiling light? If so, what tools do I need to do the whole operation? What kind of romex wire do I need? I tried searching online but the tutorials weren't that good and I couldn't find anything about the double switch.
Do I need to install a new outlet box for a hanging light fixture? I want to hang a small chandelier in my dining room and replace the existing track lighting. There's an outlet box in place now, but it's off-center from where I would like to hang the chandelier. The chandelier itself has a long cord and a chain it hangs from. I was wondering if I could hook up the wiring like normal and then install something in the center of the ceiling for the chandelier to hang from. Otherwise, I assume I need to install the outlet box where I want the chandelier to hang.
Circuit breaker trips when new light fixtures? In the bathroom we are replacing 2 fixtures above the sinks. They are 3 head track lighting fixtures. They have 3 wires, black, white and green. We connected the first fixture, put 1 bulb in it, turned the power back on, and it was fine. Tried installing the second fixture the same way, and the power comes on, but trips after 1 minute of being on. What is going on? How can we fix it?
What wattage of halogen bulb should I buy? We are installing a three light track light fixture in one of our rooms and need to buy halogen bulbs. Each light is rated up to 50 watts. Should I buy 3 50 watt bulbs or use less wattage and how much less. I'm worried about it either being too bright or not bright enough. If you have experience/knowledge please advise. It's for an office that used to be a bedroom to give you an idea of the size room. Any help is greatly appreciated.
