What lighting should i use in a kitchen with a plank ceiling? I am remodeling a 1930s home with the original plank and beam ceiling. I'd like to put halogen lighting in the kitchen but am not sure what type of lighting I can use. The electrician has suggested track lighting, but i'd prefer something less obtrusive. there appears to be approx. 3 inches of space above the planks. does anyone have experience with this type of ceiling?
can I replace fluorescent lighting with track ilghting? I have a boring old wide fluorescent light in my kitchen which looks dated and I'd like to replace it with some track lighting. Is it jus a matter of replacing the fixture itself or, will it require some rewiring?

What kind of lighting options do I have for a galley kitchen? Wondering what would look right in a galley kitchen. I don't want to do track lighting.
How to install new track lighting and light fixture.? My husband and I have never installed any type of light fixture before. We just bought a house with a large kitchen. There is only one celing fan in the middle. We would like to put track lighting in by the stove and prep area and some sort of celing fixture over the kitchen table. Is it very complicated to install new fixtures? It always looks easy on HGTV, but I know those are professionals.

Installing track lighting? Hi, I want to install track lighting in my kitchen by myself without the help of an electrician or any new construction but is this possible? Do I have to put holes in the ceiling first? Can't I just buy a set and attach it to the ceiling somehow? How about the power supply? Tell me how this could work. Thanks.
best lighting system for kitchen? Remodeling a kitchen and the current light is at one end of the room. I would like to add more overhead lighting through the one electrical box. Would track lighting be a good option. I don't need task lighting because I have under cabinet lights. Need something to give general lighting to the room.
Question about track lighting? I am wanted to update the track lighting in our kitchen that has a high vaulted ceiling, the power supply currently is at the right hand end of the track strip and about a foot beyond that there is a beam on the ceiling. Many of the track lights I have seen in the stores the power supply is in the middle of the strip and has lights on either end. I measured lastnight and that won't work in my kitchen. My question is.. Can the power base on these be moved? http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100469758&N=10000003+90401+501401+4294966199#reviews This is an example of the type I am referring to. Thanks I am sorry.. I am not wanting to move the electricity I am wanting to move the mount on the new track light to fit where the old track is. I am looking for other track light options in the mean time. For some reason the idiot that designed our house thought a light needed to be a foot away from the wall . Thank you
Track Lighting Wiring Question: Fixture has black/white - ceiling has black/white/red/ground? I recently bought a track lighting unit and have tried to replace the flourescent light box in my kitchen. The ceiling electrical box has wires for red, black, white, and a ground copper wire, but my new fixture only has the black and white. After reading countless posts on similar configurations, I wired white to white and black to red (assuming it was hot because it was used with last fixture). I left black alone and copper alone. Should I've done something differently (with ground specifically) because after reswitching at the breaker, nothing is powering with the unit? I should mention that unit (from Ikea) has cord that reaches out and sends current through metal track. If anyone is familiar with this set up, input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Shane
What are the best type of lights to install in a kitchen? Should I use track or recess lighting? My kitchen is 10x10 foot. Maybe four recess lights forming a square? What do you think?
Can you put 50w track lights into a 35w track lighting rail or will it burn out the transformer? Had a track lighting setup in the kitchen...wanted a little more light so I got some 50w bulbs that were the same size as the 35w bulbs currently in the track lighting rail. I switched two the of the 35w bulbs for 50w bulbs, now the whole thing won't turn on. I took those out and tried flipping the breakers in the panel box, but nothing will get them to come on again. Did I burn out the transformer? I don't have the spec sheet for the rail sadly. It came with the condo. I think it's an IKEA LEDING rail though, but I can't tell for sure.
Should kitchen cabinet knobs and lighting match appliances? I am sprucing up my kitchen. The cabinets are an oak color. The walls are a khaki/tan color (Sherwin Williams Latte) http://www.myperfectcolor.com/PhotoDetai... I'm adding new ceramic floors (probably like Roman gold or American Olean Hazelnut - still debating that). My fridge is stainless steel. I'll be adding a stainless steel stove and eventually as money permits a matching microhood and dishwasher. I need new lighting and am going with track lighting to spread the light around. In the eat in, I'm changing the pendant to another (it's awful gold and frosted dome now). I'm also adding knobs to the cabinets. Question: I like the dark bronze lights. Should the lights match the appliances in a nickel or something? Should the knobs also match the appliances? I'm thinking the dark color lends to the floor, cabinet and wall color, but I'm not sure if they will have to match the appliances? FYI: the kitchen accessories are red.
Is there a cheaper alternative to replacing a Lightolier 9173bbk track light? We wanted to add two more lights to our kitchen, as it's a little too dark for our taste, but these lights are like $125 online for one...is there something cheaper that will work with the same track system?
Help with rheostat control in kitchen!!!!? After replacing the three miser bulbs (65 w/120V) in the kitchen track light unit, now the rheostat doesn't work and they are on super bright and won't dim at all. Any thoughts? Did the rheostat just quit working? Or is it something we are overlooking or are just plain dumb about?
What should I put on top of my kitchen cabinets? I have vaulted ceilings in my kitchen & I've always wanted to put something on top of the cabinets. My sister came over and put some tacky fake vines that I don't like so I was thinking maybe track lighting would be nice? Any ideas on an inexpensive way of doing this? Or any other suggestions would be nice? I would leave it bare, but it really looks so BLAH! I would like to at least put something up there?
Are special dimmer bulbs needed for dimming lights? Our home has four or five rooms with dimmer switches. The light fixtures vary; most have globes attached to the ceiling while the kitchen has track lighting. I know there are such things as dimmer light bulbs. Are they necessary to the use of these light fixtures? Or will any household light build work?
Should kitchen light fixtures match each other? I found some track lighting that has red globes/shades for my kitchen area: http://www.lightinguniverse.com/products/view.aspx?sku=996516&linkLoc=recent. this is read w/ a brushed steel base. The problem is for the connected eat in area, I want a pendant, but can't find anything similar or that I really like for that matter in red. Will it matter if the kitchen shades are red and the eat in area's is white? Or, should I give up on the red for the track lighting shades and stick to white? BTW, the kitchen is a tan/khaki color (Sherwin Williams Latte) and will have a 5ft wide accent wall that has a white door on that wall. That wall color will be a red/crimson color. Here's what I'm thinking for that area: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260261613454&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=016 -OR- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=290246731462&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=019. Please help! BTW - it's silver finish b/c the appliances are stainless and the knowbs for the cabinets will be (just dressing them up with knobs- can't afford to redo them)... I was told they should coordinate with that. Plus, the kitchen opens to the family room w/ red furniture, silver lamps, and silver knobs. Furniture is dark expresso.
Is it possible to install a track light to an existing light or is it too much of a pain? I am looking to install a track light over the sink in our kitchen. I want to use the existing light in the kitchen to power the track light, but I don't want the wires to be visible ( I would like to run them above the ceiling). Ideally, I would like to have the track light on a dimmer but the kitchen light on an on/off switch, but from the same power source. Is this going to be too difficult to do myself? I am not looking to tear up the drywall ceiling to do this. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I can do this simply? Please, no stupid useless answers. Please be as specific as possible. Thanks! H Chaney - you just wasted everyone's time with your nonsense and now everyone that reads your answer will be dumber.
good kitchen lighting plan? four 50w 120v halogen bulbs in track, plus two 6" canned lights over only work area. room is about 6 ft by 11 ft. I've calculated lumens delivered by all bulbs and it appears more than adequate.
electric wires poking thrue panneled ceiling, is it safe to use? I had 70's track lighting in kitchen and I removed one set today to replace with newly purchased ceiling light. When I removed the the 1x12x48 board that the track lighting was connected to the ceiling with, I was left with electric wires poking thru existing ceiling with no electricle box. Is it saf to use and if so is ok to use wire nuts to connect all wires including grnd?
How do I install a new light fixture? I need to installing a new ceiling light in the living room. There is an existing single switch on the wall that operates some track lighting in the kitchen. Can I convert this into a double switch and have the other switch operate the ceiling light? If so, what tools do I need to do the whole operation? What kind of romex wire do I need? I tried searching online but the tutorials weren't that good and I couldn't find anything about the double switch.
My apt. has REALLY OLD fixtures (faucet handles, lights, kitchen cupboards, trim) but I have REALLY MODERN...? ...furniture and tastes. How do I make my apt. more modern and sleek and streamlined without changing hardware? I really love the modern/contemporary/sleek look. Think track lighting, geometric couches and chairs, straight lines, simple curves, silver, solid colors, minimal color. My furniture reflects that look. Think black, geometric, glass, brushed metal silver. But the problem is I'm moving into an old, old, old apt whose fixtures can't be replaced, nor do I have the budget to replace them myself even if I wanted to. The ceiling lighting is really old, the faucets are turn knobs, the cupboards have a regular generic wood trim, the bathroom and kitchen floors are tiled with a non-modern look. What are detailed suggestions of how I can reconcile the old look of my apt. with my very modern furniture? I really yearn for a modern, tranquil, minimalist, sleek , clean look...whites, blacks, silvers, neutrals, maybe a splash of color here and there but not a lot. By the way, I'm a guy who's young and recently out of grad school, in case that helps. I like a modern masculine/neutral look, for example, neutral-colored bamboo sticks instead of flowers. Thank you.
What exactly do I have to buy, and what does my landlord have to buy? I just moved into my duplex apartment a month ago and there is track lighting in the kitchen, living room and bathroom. I noticed that 2 in the kitchen have been blown sine day one...and my boyfriend thinks the landlord buys them, since they're not regular lightbulbs and can be pricey. I think I have to buy things like light bulbs. Who is right?
Wiring a tracklight in kitchen ceiling? I am installing a track light in place of an old ceiling fan, and need help with the wiring configuration. There are two bare ground wires, two light brown wires, three white wires, one black wire, one red, and one green (which I do not believe is a ground). The wall switch is an on/off dimmer unit. There is also another similar switch next to it that doesn't seem to work, but that's a seperate issue. I would greatly appreciate any help with this. Thanks!
What are my options for installing xenon under the counter lights for my kitchen? I am having granite installed this week with a 4 inch splash. I do not have a full back splash at this time. I want to install xenon under the counter (utc) lighting, but have become a bit confused. Can I hard wire the xenon lights? All the options that I have seen comes with a plug to go into the wall. I am looking for a good reference on how to do this myself (either a book or website). I have three electrical outlets along the counters, and two switches on different circuits. One is to an outdoor source and the other is to a single track light and the garbage disposal in the kitchen. Any input on to whether xenon lights can be hard wired and how I should go about this project would be greatly appreciated!
Is there an energy saving light bulb for JDR+C GU10 120V 50W Bulb? Need to save energy in my kitchen. Have 4 / 50watt bulbs in track lighting unit.
What's the best lighting style I can use for my new apartment? I am thinking of track lighting. I like having a bunch of small lights instead of having like one giant light in the middle of the room. Anyways, do you guys have any suggestions of what I can use? I want a complete awesome lighting layout for my entire apartment. The walls are white, along with the carpet, but I want to paint them in sort of a tan color. I want it to look like a sports book/poker room in a casino, with some dim lighting. It's gonna be a 1 bedroom apartment. When you walk thru the front door you are in the middle of the living room, then theres a nook in the corner for my kitchen. What kind of lighting should I have in my bedroom and kitchen?
GU10 light bulb replacement? I have a track light in my kitchen that uses the GU10 style light bulbs. One has burned out and I need to replace it, but I can't figure out how to get the old one out ! Do you twist it, or push it to pop it out, or what? Nothing I do seems to work when I do it gently, and I'm afraid to be more forceful until I know what I'm doing.
