Plug In Track Lighting Knowledge Base
Plug in track lighting? I bought a ceiling track light with 3 directional lamps on it that I could just plug into a socket a couple years ago but can't seem to find any on-line. Is there a proper name for them that I am not using correctly to search for them? Anyone have a site or even just proper term for them. Just a ceiling track light with 3 or more directional lamps that plus into a socket rather than installed to the electrical system.
Where can I get a track light with a plug in? I live in an apartment (renting) where I can not install lights by drilling holes in the ceiling and doing the electric work. I have always been a fan of track lighting but never could do it. Can you give me links of some websites that have track lights that I can just have a cord and plug in the wall with? Thanks!
"Plug in track lights"? I saw these track lights in a mens magazine a while ago. They are track lights that you plug into a wall outlet. They do not have a fuse box or require wiring into walls or ceiling. They are sold in a few different styles and you can choose how many lamps you would like. I tried searching a million ways on the internet and have come up empty. Does anyone know the website?
Is there such a thing as Plug-in or Battery-powered lighting? I need to add lighting to a corner of my (rented) apartment. (Preferably track lighting.) I'm looking for plug-in or battery-powered options; a fixture that doesn't have to be wired through the walls. There's no room for a table lamp, it's gotta hang on the walls or ceiling. Any ideas or info?
Replace light fixture with switch/receptacle? My daughter has a very old light fixture on the wall in her room with an old unpolarized outlet on it. She has track lighting on her ceiling which is not hard wired, but plugs into the light fixture. Is it possible to replace the old light fixture with a receptacle switch without any extra wiring? She wants to be able to plug in the track lights, but turn them on an off with the switch, since the track lights are her main lighting in the room and struggling in the dark to find the outlet is not her cup of team, and could be dangerous. She would also like to be able to dim the track lights. Is this possible? Is there such a thing as a receptacle dimmer switch? Would I have to do additional wiring, or could I just wire the outlet to the existing line, then wire the outlet to the switch? Thanks in advance for the help! NYS. Looks like someone is offended by my question. Oh well, misery loves company! There shouldn't be any confusion. I said the outlet was on the light fixture. The light fixture can turn on and off, but the switch is on the fixture it's self. No idea of turning off light switch turns off outlet because light switch is broken in the on position and we just moved here. I would assume it does. I also was asking about a receptacle switch not just an outlet. I'm talking about an outlet and switch in one box. No one also seemed to be able to answer if the switch could be a dimmer, and would dim the track lights that were plugged into the outlet. I know an out let can be wired to turn on and off with a switch, just not sure if it the outlet could be dimmed, or if replacing the fixture with an outlet switch combo would need additional in wall wiring.
Does this type of lighting fixture exist? I want something that plugs into a standard light bulb socket, that is just another socket that has an adjustable angle. Also I would like that other socket to have a directional shade around it. Like the kinds of light you see on track lighting in restaurants. If this exists where can I pick one up?
Is there a lighting fixture for the bathroom that can just be plugged in? My girlfriend says the lighting in our bathroom sucks, and I tend to agree. We are in a rental, so doing any kind of electrical work is out of the question. Is there some type of good bathroom lighting that comes with a cord to just plug it in? Perhaps a 3 bulb track lighting type thing? I'm electrically challenged, so any help would be gratefully appreciated.
when installing track lights do I have to connect the ground wire if there is no electic box in the ceiling? what I'm trying to do is run a track lighting fixture from the ceiling. There is no electric box where I am trying to install the lights. I thought maybe I could run a wire from the lights down the wall and connect a plug at the end of the wire to make the fixture run off of a wall outlet instead of a electric box in the ceiling. Do I still have to use the ground wire? if so, how do I do it? Is it safe to not use it? Thanks for your help & patience.
Is it ok to run speaker wire underneath track lighting? I just bought a track lighting system (which I'm going to plug into a standard outlet using the system's end power feed and cord). I'm also running the wires from my speaker system (for t.v.) across the wall in the same place that I'm placing the track lighting. So I'm planning to run the speaker lines underneath the track-- basically the lines will be placed on the ceiling and the track will be placed directly over it and screwed into the ceiling. (I will cut a small channel in the ceiling for the wire so the track can be flush without squeezing the wire.) The point is to have a single thin line of cords running together across the ceiling through the length of the track that looks like this: -------wire----------[ track ]---------wire--------- In the world of electricity and interference and heat, etc. is it not a good idea to have the speaker wires in constant contact with the track, even if it's underneath? The speaker wires are standard clear, plastic-looking cords with the two silver metal wires visible inside. The track system is the Hampton Bay Transitional Collection from Lowes, and the track is metal-like, though it may be some other material coated to look like metal. Thanks!
Where can I find interior wireless lighting? I am very interested in track lighting, however because I rent my town home, I didn't want to hire an electrician for this job. Where can I find lighting that is either wireless, or has a normal AC plug, in which I could discreetly run the plug down the wall instead of re-wiring my living room
Track lighting on multiple dimmers? I'm an electrical engineer and my senior project involves dimming 8 different incandescent lights using a microcontroller. (A cheap, do-it-yourself DJ lighting) The lighting part seems to be the problem. I want to have track-style lighting where there are 2 whites, 2 red, 2 green, and 2 blue lamps, to vary how the entire room looks and feels (it would look amazing with fog, huh?) I want to buy track lighting for this project, but I am not well educated in setting it up. Can you individually wire each lamp to its own line or are they all connected in parallel? Is there a specific brand that allows you to wire each one individually? From what I can find, it looks like its bad news for me. If I can't do track lighting, I think I'll just get a block of wood and mount miniature spot lights on them. (ie http://www.lampsplus.com/products/Black-Finish-Mini-Spot-Light__63417.html) I'll then take those wires, bound them together, and plug each one into my circuit board. Does anyone have any other ideas on how I can do this? My budget is less than $150 The lights will have to work on 120v. The microcontroller uses an optoisolator and a triac to chop the 120v wave to control the voltage waveform (just like an actual dimmer). My prototype is working and I am waiting on my printed circuit boards to arrive.
Can I install my own track lighting in a commercial environment? I am confused as to whether California and/or the NEC considers track lighting a lamp or a built in fixture. I want to attach the track to the suspended ceiling using t-bar clips and use a live end with a plug (all made by the manufacturer) that will be plugged into a wall socket. I have read that the code simply requires the rating of the track (aka 15 amps) to be equal or more than the supply rating. I assume this is so the track cannot be overloaded without first overloading the branch circuit. Also, what should I expect to pay an electrician if I wanted the wiring attached to the existing fluorescent fixtures and wall switches connected to the track? Some manufacturers refer to their track lighting as "commercial" and others do not. Is there a difference?
Do they make covers or plugs for empty light bulb sockets? Basically I have replaced my whole house with Energy Saving Bulbs. Now since these bulbs are much brighter and save on electricity, I do not need as many in my track lighting about the sinks in all the bathrooms. So where there was 8 sockets for light bulbs, I only used 4 of them and it is already too bright, My Question is, do they make covers or plugs or caps what ever you would call them to screw into the empty light bulb sockets in order for it to look better and to not see the empty exposed bases. These are for Globe Lights G25 60W - 15 Watt Energy Saving. Thank you
Ceiling lighting help? I live in an apartment that has very little overhead lighting...none what so ever in our living room. It is very cave like once the sun goes down and I'm in search of a track lighting system or something similar that I can install. The issue is I am in search of a system that does not require hard wire installation and only requires a plug. Thanks in advance!
how to install a track light on the ceiling from scratch ? I have just moved house, i have put up my dartboard. But the light bulb from the middle of the room isn't good enoug to light up the dartboard. I need to install a ceiling spotlight fixture, i think it's called track lighting. It has 3 halogen bulbs which i can light up the dartboard with to make playing darts much better. My question is how do i plug these into my existing electricity circuit? I'm assuming when i cut a hole out in the ceiling and screw the new lights in place i will run a cable into my attic then connect it to the power somehow, then i will have to cut my wall up to put a new switch in next to my other one for the main light then polyfill and repaint the wall ? Can someone please help me as i have absolutely no experiance with electrics and what i might need to buy to get the job done or how to connect the light to the electricity supple etc. My only other option is to pull out the lmain light move it 1 metre to the right and put in the track spotlights instead of the main light and use a lamp at night in that room. Thanks for any help on this matter, sorry if i'm not very clear about what i'm on about but i really have no idea what to do. rik.
How to troubleshoot breaker/electrical problems? I'm installing recessed lighting upstairs, and ran into problems when I tested my first can. Some facts: - Upstairs has its own breaker panel - Conduit that fed the track lighting prior to demo has one black, one white and two red wires coming out of it - There are no GFI outlets upstairs - Lights are controlled by switches I removed the old track lighting and connected the recessed lighting can to the existing wiring coming from the breaker panel by connecting the black wire on the can to the black wire coming out of the conduit, and likewise with the white wire. When I turned the power back on, the light was lit, but lit continuously. Flipping switches did nothing. So, I turned power off and swapped the black wire for one of the red wires. Nothing. Tried the other red wire. Nothing. I reconnected black to black, white to white and turned the power on. The breaker blew and I disconnected everything. Then, I turned the breaker back on and got out my voltage detector to see if I could figure out which wires were hot. Now, there is no voltage in any of the wires. I tested voltage on the wires directly coming out of the breakers and the 3 that connect to the conduit and the switches have no power coming out of them. The other 4 breakers which control plugs and other lights work fine. I have tried reconnecting the canister, with a different light. Doesn't work. I have tried a different canister. Doesn't work. I've tried switching a good breaker into the 'bad' position. Doesn't work. I've tried swtiching a 'bad' breaker into a good position to make sure the breaker isn't fried. All my breakers are good. I've tried attaching a different wire to the bad breakers to see if I can get a reading on my voltage meter. I don't get anything. When I have everything connected as it was when I started, the voltage meter doesn't go off when it gets near the breaker, as it does with the other ones. However, it does go off when it directly touches the wire coming out of the breaker. But, when I test the other end of that wire, there is nothing. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.
Why do track light systems have minimum load requirements. What creates minimum load requirements in a circuit? I bought a 12volt LED light unit to replace an incandescent. I want to plug it directly to a 12 volt battery. I don't want to burn it out. It says "Use only on multi-track systems or outdoor landscaping systems meeting minimum load requirements" I know that it cannot harm the battery. I'm only concerned about getting the best performance from the LED. Something tells me that TexasMaverick doesn't have a degree in electronics. how to run a track lights to a single pole light switch that was change to a Leviton Triple Rocker Switch? now i just put track lights on my wall so i ran a drop to the switch box that is a single pole ... so i want it to have its own switch .. plus i want to run more track lights in the other side in the future so i got a Leviton Triple Rocker Switch 1755 - Controls three lights from one location. Features: * Fits standard Decora wallplates * 15A 120V AC * Device feed: 20A-120V * Commercial Grade * Note: Total combined load must not exceed 20Amps ..................................... now i ran the cables from the existing light ... black on side (WITH ONE SCREW) AND WHITE ON THE 1st screw .. it works ... now the track lights i dunno what to do .. i have 3 outputs on the track lights ... one is silver ..book say white ..another one say green .. ground... and the last one is gold'ish .. it say black .. im stumped at this point ... the track lights work if i run the goldish .. and silver wires to a plug .. and plug it to the wall ... but i dont know how to apply it to the switch ./
Good affordable overhead lighting, what ideas do you suggest ? #1, I live on pennies, so we have to be creative. IN my house, all I have is one over head light in the ceiling and I like LOTS of light. I live in Oregon. So what can single 57 yr old female do to add light ? I was thinking I didn't want to have to wire anything. I can be mechanically inclined, but not wiring and that costs a lot to hire done and I have no one to ask for free. I don't decorate and so am not up and the latest and greatest way to easily add overhead lighitng. I was thinking along the lines of "track halogen lighting" but one that I could plug in. Any suggestions, I'll take them :) I actually want it to light up the whole room. Since I like lots of light, I like it to be very bright and since my front room has no overhead lamps, I would like to probably do track lighting of some kind to give it a lot of light. I guess I just want some options even if they cost money on how to light up my rooms in every room or how to go about starting to look , what category ? I'm more pragmatic than interior decor, so once I even bought a shop halogen lamp and brought it in for the winter as I hate our long winter days. I have one of those large $300 light boxes and I love that very bright look.
Do they a a heater for cars that can plug into the cig. lighter? The garage can't figure out why my blower motor works intermittly. If it works when I bring it in, they can't track it. It's works on and off all day. When it does work, it works normally. I live in mn. and need defrosters. I had a typo. I meant do they make a heater.
I want to hang a track light with 3 small lamps on it on my bathroom wall. It is not hardwired ? ANd has a plug in wire with a switch in it. My question is How do I make sure it is up very secure, all it has on the back are 2 small holes to slide into 2 screws or nails, I don't want it to fall down into a sink or any other water. I have dry wall in the bathroom , so it is not super great cement or brick walls with beams like the rest of the walls I have in the old building I live in. What do you suggest? thanks! Have a great evening.
What are my options for installing xenon under the counter lights for my kitchen? I am having granite installed this week with a 4 inch splash. I do not have a full back splash at this time. I want to install xenon under the counter (utc) lighting, but have become a bit confused. Can I hard wire the xenon lights? All the options that I have seen comes with a plug to go into the wall. I am looking for a good reference on how to do this myself (either a book or website). I have three electrical outlets along the counters, and two switches on different circuits. One is to an outdoor source and the other is to a single track light and the garbage disposal in the kitchen. Any input on to whether xenon lights can be hard wired and how I should go about this project would be greatly appreciated!
Fast Track Pro light wont turn on? I have an AT4040 condenser microphone & a M-audio fast track pro audio interface. My computer recognizes my interface because when I go into mixcraft to check my MIDI it's there. But I've been trying to make it my recording device & I couldn't.That's when I noticed that when I plugged in my cable from my mic. cable to the interface , it would turn on for a split second then turn off & stay off. I turned on my phantom power & everything (48 PH Power switch on the back). I don't know what else to do. Please help me ASAP.
I have a small chandelier I am going to hook to electricity.? Here is what I have...a wire that looks like a regular cord for a plug in and a copper looking wire I assume is the ground. In the drop ceiling I have two wires that seem to have been been cut from electric cord and hard wired into another track lighting. I have had a light up here before but have not ever previously hooked electric up. I know it can handle the electric current. There are caps at the end of the wires so I am assuming (love assuming) that I can attach the wires from the light to these wires and recap. Then I need to ground the cooper wire, but what is a good ground? It is a drop ceiling so can I attach to the grid or wires holding the drop ceiling? Of course the electric will be off! I am wondering is it possible to cross the two wires and have a big boo boo happen? I appreciate the input. I am really needing to get this completed shortly so please anyone with some expertise respond!
Electrical Issue at Outlet? I have an outlet that keeps changing it's status on my test plug (3 lights). It goes from correct to reversed hot/neutral for no apparent reason. I traced it back (I think) to where it feeds from, an outlet in the ceiling for the garage door opener, which reads correctly. It was back-stabbed, so I removed the wires and secured them under the screws. This brought the outlet in question back to the correct indications. I plugged power strip into it and about an hour later the strip tripped. I currently have removed items that would be plugged into that outlet. My thoughts are that somewhere, there is a loose wire. There must be branch that I didn't locate, or the branch began at the ceiling outlet and I didn't actually find the only feed for this outlet - since it is in the attic, I may have missed a junction box. If anyone has any thoughts on this I would appreciate some advice. I thought I was on the right track with the loose wire theory, but since I think I have tightened them, I am perplexed. Thanks for your help. Changed/replaced the outlet in question prior to tracing it's origin. The outlet in the ceiling is for a modern garage door opener - The outlet in the ceiling is acting like a junction box and has nothing to do with the opener other than its location. If the house didn't have the outlet when the opener was installed, it would have been at that time, however, this looks like it is original to the house (16 years old). - - Lediy99, the outside outlet might be the culprit - I just purchased this vacation/future retirement home and in the process of checking all the outlets. The home inspector pointed out an outlet outside that was not covered properly and not a GFIC. The owner hired an electrician to make requested repairs and instead of replacing the outside outlet w/ a GFIC they capped it - It is possible that it is on the same circuit b/c it is outside the garage - The breaker kills the lights in the attic as well as the two outlets - There is a floor in the attic that hinders tracing, but the outside outlet could be causing it - My next trip is over Thanksgiving and I will check out all of your suggestions --- Any others out there? Thanks 1 more thing - the light switch is a single switch, not a 3 way. I was thinking of what else was going on - I changed the switches (3 gang) to a timer for the coach lights outside, and 2 Decora switches. It is possible that I have mis-wired one Decora switch upside-down, even though it is in the box properly oriented. When the contractors wire gang boxes, they jump one switch to another... I will need to check that as well.
Ceiling light Fixture...Red, Yellow, White, Green Wires? We moved into a condo not too long ago and we finally bought a ceiling track light to install.... There is a spot in living room with a fixture pre-cut out with wires.. There was nothing installed there before, just a white cover.. It's a newer condo (built in 2008)... I have installed a bathroom fixture in my old house but i have never seen this type of wire setup before.. (the bathroom fixture was 3 single wires.. white, black, copper... this one is confusing!! There are 4 coloured wires: 3 separate red ones all capped with the same cap 3 separate white wires all capped with the same cap the green and copper wire (ground i am assuming) and a single Yellow wire capped what's the red and white? is the yellow one hot? i opened up the light switch to where i am assuming it goes to cause the one switch doesn't do anything right now.. the one on the left turns on a power plug (our lamp), which has 3 red wires connected to it.. (1 on top, 2 on the bottom) the other switch, which does nothing has a yellow and red connected to it.... The white wire is no where to be found so i don't know what the White is for? which one is the hot wire? there is no black wire? never seen this setup before ; < any help would be GREAT
Microsoft mouse 4000 won't work? I just bought this mouse a couple weeks ago and it's been working fine the software downloaded from the usb thing and the mouse responded. However, now, when I turn the mmouse on the blue tracking light on the bottom works but the little green led on the top turns off eventually. I think this light just tells me the battery strength but maybe it tells you connection too. The mouse wont do anything on screen and my computer wont recognize when i plug the usb in.
Do I have to replace my half shaft? I took my car into the shop the other day. My ABS light, service light, and my track light came on. The day before it came it was dark, we got 6 in. of snow, so the roads was not that great. I ran over a Big pot hole going 55 mph. The next day those lights came on. Well when I would press my break it was acting like it was on a ice road and didn't want to stop all the way, well my gas pedal would start to shake. Well I took it in to get it checked out. The lights was not on at the time. They could not find what was making my car do that. But they told me I needed my back breaks done, and my half shaft broke. Well my car didn't act up for 2 days. I went and got my breaks fixed, but not my half shaft cause I didn't have $300 to do so right then. When I was driving it home and went 65 my hole car started to shake, and has a smell to it when I pulled up to my house.Could my half shaft be the reason why my car is acting the way it is? Or could it be something else? I am about to give up on my car, can someone PLEASE tell me what it could be and how to go about fixing it. I am a single mother that lives pay check to pay check. Can anyone help me answer my question??? Oh I have a 2001 chevy cavalier Also my car was shacking this time last year and it was due to my spark plugs needs to be wired cause it came undone. Well we fixed the problem, well when I was doing my tune up the spark plug would not get tight, so we found out it did the same thing, so we just fixed it. could my car be acting up due to a spark plug?
Do I need to change the wire type? Having my basement finished. I got a company that is framing in the walls, doing the heating ducts, and running Electricity. I have done wiring and outlets before myself. Because its my house, I have an idea what I'm going to do with it, I was going to add a couple of outlets and add some dimmer lighters. I feel fine doing it, but I'm a little worried about over loading the breaker. 1. I assume he put in a 15 amp breaker, I assume this is the basics people put in. (For one room) 2. He is running 14-2 wire. I know this is made for 15 amps, and is the basic that is required. 3. I have some 12-2 wire that is for 20 amps. I'm usually more on the safe side. Would there be any problem using 12-2 wire, when it looks like its 14-2 coming from the breaker? 4. Right now there is 4 outlets put in. I'm going to add three more, one more to be closer to where I'll put my computer, and two more that will go for the Water Softer in the next room, and One extra for the wash room. 5. Right now there is only 1 Light in the middle of the room. I plan on keeping this, but I wanted to add two Track lighting systems (each with 3 50 watts) this would be on a dimmer switch. I don't think the outlets are a problem, but I'm worried if the Lights would over do it. I know to upgrade the switch box for the lights to be a double. Is this okay to run on 15 amps? With a computer plugged in? Thanks (sorry for how long this is) Actually when I said washroom I mean Laundry room, The Dryer is on its own, Washer I assume is part of the washer Circuit. I know its not part of the new addition.
Guitar problems in the studio.? I had just gotten a full rewire in my guitar and everything is set up correctly. And yes it is grounded correctly. I went to go plug it into my audio interface and I turned the distortion pedal on and it has a small buzz except for one spot when I turn. I then opened Guitar Rig in FL studio and then the buzz was louder and hearing the dj from Radio Disney talking about Justin Beiber. I played with the settings a little bit and I got the distortion perfect on Guitar Rig and got rid of Radio Disney. But i still have the buzz. I just shielded my guitar, but didnt do much. What I also failed to do, which I am doing tomorrow, is put the wire I connected to my new track lights inside conduit which when off, gets rid of a lot of the buzz but is still there. I am using Monster cables but I think that is the main problem is that they aren't shielded correctly because of mt experiment with them. What is the best cables i can get that are shielded. Any answeres would help because I cant record any guitars like this for my clients that want a live guitar being played. Sidenote, the microphone is not affected by anything. No buzzing or anything.
how much electricty does a lamp timer use? I am trying to track down how much energy a simple lamp or light timer uses - the kind that plug in to the wall, have a mechanical dial with tabs that turn on/off lights or appliances. I am curious how many watts this device uses for example with nothing plugged in to it and have not been able to track it down.
Can anyone help get a Bachman HO model train to run? I recently got a model train and I can not get it to run there seems to be power to the power supply it lights up when plugged in but I either have not got the track (EZ track my foot) together properly or I do not have the train set corrrectly to the track,. Fast Track Pro microphone input not working! How do I get it to work? I have a fast track pro, running Pro Tools 8 on windows, and have a Sterling audio ST59 condenser microphone. Fast Track Pro doesn't seem to be reading the microphone. The Phantom Power is turned on and I get a noise when I plug/unplug the Mic. The signal light indicator is not on except for a brief moment while plugging the Mic in. I'm thinking there is a problem with my PC settings. It work for a while but now it doesn't. Any help will be appreciated. Thank You!

Pontiac sunfire exhaust problems? For some reason when i start the car the "Check engine light", and track control is off". The exhaust is making a put put put noise instead of a continuous sound. I just replace the #1, and number 4 spark plug cords which helped my car drive "in gear" so any idea why this light is on and the exhaust making put put put noise? Also sounds like a jet taking off the more rmps i get up the louder it is. (never happend before till now) Can i still drive the car if i cannot get it fixed in time?
instrument cluster wiring plug.? i have two books on the wiring and the plug, but when tracking down the wires, the oil gage wire is in the opposite ends where the the other wire goes to a light in the cluster, also the red # 255 and yellow 254 are switched in the plug also, my source is the 67 shop manual and the 67 electrical wiring book. also does the yellow wire go to ground in some way. hope someone can help it sucks trying to wire a dash up when every book says someting else, of the diagrams are wrong. please help.
Does anyone know what the double hanging lamps are called? We have an older home with no lights in the dining room. Whoever lived here before had put up some track with 4 little sliding hooks. Hanging from these hooks is 2 light fixtures that are corded together and run off of one plug in. Does anyone know what these are called? I have looked all over the internet and have only found the hanging lights that have only one fixture. I need two that are wired to the same plug in. Any advise would be helpful!!!
