Track Lighting System Knowledge Base

How far off the wall should the tracks of an "L" shaped track lighting system be in an "L" shaped kitchen? Should the tracks be placed so they are over the cabinets or 1 foot off the cabinets etc? How far should they be? The kitchen is a 10 by 10 in the shape of an "L"
Track lighting system: any unified standards? Now I am using Halo trac light system and wondering if there is any description on ANSI about the track lighting system. Is there any standard or each manufacturer has its own one?
How do I install Ikea track lighting where traditional track lighting existed previously? My apartment formerly had traditional track lighting, but now all that's left is a live end connector sticking out of the wall (not sure if it's H, J, or L standard); even the track itself is gone. I'm thinking of purchasing Ikea's "Termosfar" track lighting system to use at the same location but am not sure how to figure out what additional parts will be needed to install the low-voltage Ikea system into the existing infrastructure. Help! :-)
Installing Home Depot track lighting - Voltage Question? As the title states, I'm installing a standard track lighting system on my ceiling. It will be wired directly where a previously existing ceiling fan is located. I want it to be dimmable. My question is in the voltage and how I determine if I need a Magnetic Low Voltage Dimmer or a Electronic Low Voltage Dimmer? Which one will make a humming noise or give spikes in the dimming? Links would be great too. Thanks!
Can I convert a recessed light fixture to power a track light system? My hallway has 5 recessed can lights each with a 75watt bulb operated on the same switch. I would like to install a 5-bulb halogen track light in the middle of the hallway to illuminate wall art. Can I remove the bulb and insert from the middle cannister fixture, cut the wires to the bulb receptacle and use the same wires to power up the track light. The track light with 5 bulbs will consume 150 watts through a low voltage transformer. Is this safe? The cannister light sticker says 75-watts maximum.
Is it ok to run speaker wire underneath track lighting? I just bought a track lighting system (which I'm going to plug into a standard outlet using the system's end power feed and cord). I'm also running the wires from my speaker system (for t.v.) across the wall in the same place that I'm placing the track lighting. So I'm planning to run the speaker lines underneath the track-- basically the lines will be placed on the ceiling and the track will be placed directly over it and screwed into the ceiling. (I will cut a small channel in the ceiling for the wire so the track can be flush without squeezing the wire.) The point is to have a single thin line of cords running together across the ceiling through the length of the track that looks like this: -------wire----------[ track ]---------wire--------- In the world of electricity and interference and heat, etc. is it not a good idea to have the speaker wires in constant contact with the track, even if it's underneath? The speaker wires are standard clear, plastic-looking cords with the two silver metal wires visible inside. The track system is the Hampton Bay Transitional Collection from Lowes, and the track is metal-like, though it may be some other material coated to look like metal. Thanks!
My track lighting is not working, but other lights on the switch are. Help? I have a track light system that has 5 halogen bulbs that hang from a cable. Two cables stretch across the ceiling about 12 feet from a junction box. on either side of the track light system are can lights. They are on a 4 way switch. They have worked with no problems for years, and for some reason one day, none of the track lights worked. The cans still work fine, but for some reason not the track system. I tried replacing a bulb, but that didn't help. I used one of those cheap electricity sensors that you check the power at an outlet or switch and put it on the cables, and it beeped as if there is power going down the line. It did the same at the bottom of the cables where the bulb fixture is attached. What gives?! Any ideas? Thanks
How many track heads (volts/watts) can I put in a 6 foot track? I have four heads in the track now but they are old and dim. I want to replace them with more modern heads but most importantly I want more and better light. It is an Elco track lighting system that is about 5 years old. Track in perfect shape. Thank you for any guidance, suggestions, or ideas!
Low voltage lighting in high humidity areas? I'm thinking about installing a low voltage (12VAC) track lighting system in a bathroom. My only concern is the humidity causing a short. Does anybody have any experience with this?
How to remove fixed track lighting heads? I know, they're called "fixed" for a reason. I moved into a new apartment recently and inherited a rather 80's guy track lighting system. Since it was made by Con-Tech, I'm not sure if I can replace any of the fixtures readily anyways, but I would at least like to be able to remove the fixed lights for a good cleaning. I've been up on a ladder for the last fifteen minutes trying to maneuver these things out without flat out disassembling the whole track. Any help with this? This is not the kind with the tab on the side. Those are not fixed.
Is there a light monitoring system to track when a light goes out in a building? Is there maybe software which can detect which lights are out in a building to make it easier to replace the bulbs?
best lighting system for kitchen? Remodeling a kitchen and the current light is at one end of the room. I would like to add more overhead lighting through the one electrical box. Would track lighting be a good option. I don't need task lighting because I have under cabinet lights. Need something to give general lighting to the room.
Is there a cheaper alternative to replacing a Lightolier 9173bbk track light? We wanted to add two more lights to our kitchen, as it's a little too dark for our taste, but these lights are like $125 online for one...is there something cheaper that will work with the same track system?
I have track lighting that doesn't work, please help? The track is getting power( i checked with my voltage meter), but the lights will not come on, this is a 12 volt system. Very confusing....
Ceiling lighting help? I live in an apartment that has very little overhead lighting...none what so ever in our living room. It is very cave like once the sun goes down and I'm in search of a track lighting system or something similar that I can install. The issue is I am in search of a system that does not require hard wire installation and only requires a plug. Thanks in advance!
Lighting my room with Blacklights? I want to add blacklight lighting to my room, and that doesn't mean just a bunch of random blacklight bulbs. I want a legitimate lighting system, such as lamps, track lighting, or wire lighting. Any idea how much this would cost? What would be the best way to do it, whether it would be ceiling lights, lamps, floor lamps, string lights etc.? Also, are there any long-term aspects of my health that I should be concerned with involving prolonged exposure to blacklight?
Do I need a bigger breaker than a 20 amp for 8 fixtures? I have 12ft of Cooper Wiring Emarald track lighting Model P6502W, which is 3 tracks put together to reach max allowed length. This contains 9 x 120v-60hz /12v-50w Dimmable Power Supplies. A chandelier with 6 x 40w bulbs. A GE Profile Gas Stove model JGB920. A pendulum 120v 50w. And 2 x 60w bulbs in the garage. I'm not sure if there are any other wall outlets attached to this circuit breaker. The reason I am asking this question, is because I attached a Low Voltage Electronic Dimmer 600w (Cooper Wiring Aspire) to my 12ft track lighting system. However, when the lights are turned on there is a loud buzzing coming from each of the the transformers. I attached an incadecent dimmer (same v and type) to see if my original information was wrong, but this still buzzed, just with a lesser tone. Please help! I have tested the dimmer and it works properly. I also have the luxury on this track system of removing each transformer w/light with just a twist of the wrist. I had already tested the theory of over loading the dimmer by slowly removing each one until there was just one left and it still buzzed loudly. When this track lighting system is on a standard 3 way with no dimmer there is no buzz.... but I would like to control the concentration of light... Thanks for all of your responses... I am not an electrician so that is why I am here to ask for help. I thought that if the breaker was overloaded it would pop... but I have to ask. I feel that there are no dumb questions... just maybe some dumb actions.. I'm trying to avoid those.
Why do track light systems have minimum load requirements. What creates minimum load requirements in a circuit? I bought a 12volt LED light unit to replace an incandescent. I want to plug it directly to a 12 volt battery. I don't want to burn it out. It says "Use only on multi-track systems or outdoor landscaping systems meeting minimum load requirements" I know that it cannot harm the battery. I'm only concerned about getting the best performance from the LED. Something tells me that TexasMaverick doesn't have a degree in electronics. Tinkertailorcandlestickmaker: The original question was and remains a two part question. There are no rules about having two part questions on Yahoo answers. The follow up question and the "Additional Details" that followed were added to specify that the query was about electric current. None of these answers are useful or even informative. The fact that two so called "Top Contributors" failed to answer a question that should be easy for an electrician to handle reflects sadly on the quality of information shared on this site.
Track Lighting: Poor design...horrible installation issues....? I recently purchased track lighting from Lowes. It was a nice, moderately expensive system with LED lights.... The problem came when installing it. After completing the wiring, it was next to impossible to bolt the system to the ceiling. The mount was fine and adjustable but the plate covering the wiring attached to the lights completely obscured the access to two screw holes needed to secure the light to the ceiling. Has anyone else come across a poorly designed light like this that makes it next to impossible to install without pulling a McGuyver? **Nope..the cover does not snap into place...that make too much sense. Like I said it's a poor design.
I need a 30' track lighting / cable track solution for kind of cheap? I'm moving into a great loft so I'm broke. But it has this awesome 30' brick wall and I am mounting my artwork via a cool ceiling mount hanging system. The only problem - I need a LONG track light to illuminate this project. But this place is very expensive so I need something VERY affordable. I'd like a low-volt dual cable system with 9 basic spot lights over 30' of cable, mounted straight from wall to wall, maybe 4 or 5 inches from the ceiling. I figure each light could be 30-50 watts and I was thinking halogen. I would also want to purchase a dimmer switch that could adjust this bad boy. I'd be retrofitting a standard ceiling mounted light to house the transformer. I have no idea where to start here - I don't (can't) pay a ton for this. But it will really finish my new pad if I can pull this off for under $500. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! :)
how the use of a transmission diffraction grating enables the tracking system? The tracking system of a CD player is designed to monitor, and correct if necessary, the alignment of the laser on the spiral track by measuring reflected light intensity. how the use of a transmission diffraction grating enables the tracking system to ‘know’ when the laser is off track and also to ‘know’ which direction it must be moved in order to put it back on the spiral track.
Track light related question? I have one of these photo below in my living room. As you can see one of the can is missing a bulb because it stop working. 1) how do I test the can to see if it is still good ? http://postimage.org/image/thtxrrd0/ 2) Its pretty dark with these setting. Do you have a better suggestion to how I can brighten up my room using the track (but different kind of lighting system) ? i do not want to be spending much money, and rather use what I've got already ( without new track wiring construction). "flood torch lamp" "They usually have 300 watt halogen bulb and project the light up on your white ceiling and it reflects off the ceiling." could you give me some link / image ?
Plug in track lighting? I bought a ceiling track light with 3 directional lamps on it that I could just plug into a socket a couple years ago but can't seem to find any on-line. Is there a proper name for them that I am not using correctly to search for them? Anyone have a site or even just proper term for them. Just a ceiling track light with 3 or more directional lamps that plus into a socket rather than installed to the electrical system.
Is there a GPS tracking system inside the latest traffic lights themselves? Just wondering if the latest installments of traffic lights that are attachments to the metal structure have a tracking device to the parts. I recently saw that someone must have stolen the red, yellow, and green attachment to one by my house. Is it possible for the criminal to be found by any means? Is this piece worth any significant value if sold to a buyer? Thanks for any help you can give me to understand this!
How can i install track lightingin a bedroom with only switched outlets? i currently have an IKEA termosfar track light set now, but i just heard from another friend (who has the same system) that it can only be installed with a overhead light already in place. OR does someone know how to switch which outlets are connected to the light switch in the room? currently the only one is next to the bed, an needless to say, its pretty dark in the bedroom! -- How can i tell if the track system i bought can connect to a power cord?
Do I need a transformer for all track lights? I recently bought track lighting for a new home from Pottery Barn - it is 120 volts. This is the link: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p7766/index.cfm?pkey=ctrack-lighting-kits The contractors I've spoken to have been telling me I need some kind of transformer, but this lighting system doesn't come with one - and the PB customer service people had NO idea what I was talking about. The current track lights are very small and on a spindly, wavy track - and a massive box at the end. I am unsure whether a transformer would be necessary for these and if so, where would I even get an appropriate one?
How to fix a track circuit imbalance? Trying to fix a track circuit without returning to the location, but can't figure out how to do it. The track circuit is part of a light rail system. We got a call stating the track circuit has been bobbling, which I think is due to traction return current. How do I got about telling them ways to fix it without returning to the field.
Looking for info about what lights ie Low Voltage, Lightolier, etc to light a clothing store? space is about 25 x 25 with a sky light in the middle. Want a really good track light system and some additional indirect light. Looking for ideas or any advice. thanks m
I would like to bulid and operate a dirt track speedway? How much land will I need for a three-eighths mile track with pit area, parking, bleachers, consessions, facilities, press box, sound system, and lighting?, How much start-up money should I ask for?
Heard a "pop" and now my lights dont work...? I have a track lighting system, where I can add or remove lights easily. I added a new light, turned my lights on and I heard a "pop". I went to my circuit break and none of the circuits were tripped. They were all on the ON position. I reset the circuit that the lights are on anyways. Still, none of my lights work. I have dimmer switches installed that control the lights and the little LED on the switches is on. So I know the circuit is still getting power. Is it possible that I ruined my track lighting and will have to buy all new fixtures? Or did I just blow out all of the bulbs? Is it even possible to ruin the fixtures? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Which Model of RFID device should i use to make a simple vehicle tracking/detection system? I am currently working on my BE prokect for which my topic is Vehicle tracking system. I thought of using RFID cards ie. RFID transponders and RFId transceivers. I was looking aorund for an affordable RFID device with a good range . Can anyone please share some light in this issue? Thanks & Regards,
Im an engineering student and im trying to design a release system for a hot wheels drag racing track. Ideas? we have a design project that where we need to design a release system that will release a hot wheels car and it has to have a switch to tell when the car leaves and tell if it went before the light turned green or not. does anyone have any ideas?!
Do I need to change the wire type? Having my basement finished. I got a company that is framing in the walls, doing the heating ducts, and running Electricity. I have done wiring and outlets before myself. Because its my house, I have an idea what I'm going to do with it, I was going to add a couple of outlets and add some dimmer lighters. I feel fine doing it, but I'm a little worried about over loading the breaker. 1. I assume he put in a 15 amp breaker, I assume this is the basics people put in. (For one room) 2. He is running 14-2 wire. I know this is made for 15 amps, and is the basic that is required. 3. I have some 12-2 wire that is for 20 amps. I'm usually more on the safe side. Would there be any problem using 12-2 wire, when it looks like its 14-2 coming from the breaker? 4. Right now there is 4 outlets put in. I'm going to add three more, one more to be closer to where I'll put my computer, and two more that will go for the Water Softer in the next room, and One extra for the wash room. 5. Right now there is only 1 Light in the middle of the room. I plan on keeping this, but I wanted to add two Track lighting systems (each with 3 50 watts) this would be on a dimmer switch. I don't think the outlets are a problem, but I'm worried if the Lights would over do it. I know to upgrade the switch box for the lights to be a double. Is this okay to run on 15 amps? With a computer plugged in? Thanks (sorry for how long this is) Actually when I said washroom I mean Laundry room, The Dryer is on its own, Washer I assume is part of the washer Circuit. I know its not part of the new addition.
Which is better? CFL or halogen? yahoo has an article from Slate up, touting the CFL over the incadescent, but what about halogens? I switched several years ago to halogens cause a smaller wattage will give me a brighter light than regular incadescents. Now should I change all my light fixtures again??? (we put in several track lighting systems with halogen) thanks guys, gee I was hoping to get more response from the green community :( Beth, yep thats the slate article i was reading. I know the halogens get VERY hot, but they last sooo much longer than normal bulbs. we only use them in the track lighting or in the ceiling 'cans' instead of floodlights, so no chance of me or the kids getting burned. thx, I'll check GE! kitiany, my peeve with the CFL is I dont think I'll like the way they'll LOOK in my ceiling cans, yeah silly I know. plus I really hate the glow of flourescent lighting. I cant wait for an LED replacement either!
Can a Light Rail system get stuck in traffic and would it cost a ton more to do what Boston did? The city I live in, as you can probably see from my user name, is Cincinnati. The building of a regional transit system has long been debated here. Many ideas culminated in 2002 and stopped when a light rail system was voted down. But, now that gas is rising and traffic is worse (yes Cincinnati is growing contrary to popular belief) and a regional transit system is again being pondered. A light rail system is what most people believe would work. But, I wondered something. Don't many light rail systems move on track embed on the street? So wouldn't they too get stuck in traffic? I noticed Boston has a light rail but it is separate from the street. So can a light rail system get stuck in traffic and is Boston's way costly?
issues and ticket tracking system? What is a great way to track and follow up on every day business issues maybe assign it a ticket number for my company many issues are called in and emailed daily and some times they take a few days to get resolved, I would like to ensure that nothing slip thru the cracks and we follow up on all outstanding matters, we have 25 locations all that send in problems like their printer or the light are out, things like that needing attention, any help would be greatly appreciated. Multilpe user would have to be able to share and update and address.
How do I restore an OnQ home automation and security system after the RAM was cleared? I would like to know how to restore a configured home automation and security system. The system combines a programmable security system made by OnQ and controlled lights, electrical hardware, and outlets made by X-10. The system has 2 collections of stored user settings: EEPROM and RAM. Among other things, the RAM keeps track of the current date and time, as well as the event log of tripped sensors and user code entries. Other things, such as user codes, device and code names, security and phone dialing settings, as well as all customized programs and buttons remain intact when the RAM is reset. When the RAM is cleared, more configuration settings than just the items mentioned above are lost. The system is currently unable to control most (but not all) of the lights and other electronics. They can no longer be turned on or off through programs or by manually initiating a command on the door entry panel. I need to determine what specific settings were lost when the RAM was cleared.
